Chapter Ten

Tyler watched from the shadows as Brooke paced. She knew the tactic well. It was the time of morning when it was almost impossible to stay awake, and on watch, falling asleep wasn’t acceptable. Moving around helped. She could see Patrick in the distance, monitoring the surveillance equipment, his head constantly dropping forward as he fought to stay awake. Carlson and Glass were sleeping. Hopefully. Everyone needed to be in perfect form when it came time to move. She started toward Brooke, though she hadn’t intended to. A branch broke under her feet, and Brooke spun around, her gun in hand.

Tyler emerged from the trees with her hands up and Brooke flipped up her goggles and walked over. “You scared the shit out of me. I could have shot you!”

“Well, seeing as those bullets are rubber, I probably would have survived, and I taught you better than to shoot at an unidentified target.”

Brooke punched Tyler in the arm. “You could have warned me.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I should have shouted your name out as I was walking through the forest. I’ll do that next time.”

Brooke rolled her eyes. “Always the comedian, I see. Even at the butt crack of dawn.”

Tyler didn’t realize she had placed her hand on Brooke’s back as they spoke. She moved her hand away like she’d been burned. Pay attention. Focus. Stop acting without thinking.

“You don’t have to take your hand off me.” Brooke’s vulnerability seeped through in her tone, another reminder of things she liked so much about Brooke.

“Yes, I do. I shouldn’t have come over. I’m sorry. I’m going to go.”

Brooke took Tyler’s hand and placed it against her chest. “Don’t go yet.” She held Tyler’s hand as they stood in front of each other, close enough Tyler could feel the rise and fall of Brooke’s chest.

She closed her eyes and focused on the sound of Brooke’s breathing. It was reassuring, comforting, and it felt…safe.

Brooke slowly moved her hand up Tyler’s arm, and although she had long ago put on a thick black fleece, she could feel each of Brooke’s fingertips with excruciating intimacy. Tyler’s voice dried up and her breath hitched. Say it. Walk away. Do something. “I’m going to get some sleep.”

“Okay.” Brooke moved against Tyler’s body and pressed her lips against her mouth.

Tyler hesitated for a moment. She could feel her control slipping, and as she desperately tried to hold on to the last thread of her resolve, she heard a soft moan escape the back of Brooke’s throat, and her knees almost gave out. She forcibly pushed herself away. “I can’t. I’m sorry, but I can’t.” Her breath was ragged. She was trying to control it and everything else her body was experiencing. Looking at Brooke was too painful, so she turned her back before she could say the next words. “I wish this was different, I wish I was different, but I’m not.”

A voice coming through the mic interrupted the moment.

“Hart, come in, Hart.” Brooke failed to respond, and Tyler looked over her shoulder.
