It occurred to him on his drive to work that Maura would have to talk to his mom at some point today to get Makayla home. The thought shouldnât bother him; they got along well most of the time, and yet he was uneasy thinking about it. For Maura. It would be hard for Maura to talk right now and pretend that nothing was wrong. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and his mother had excellent powers of perception, so sheâd know immediately something was up. Maura wouldnât share what had happened; their marriage was their business, and neither of them had ever been the type to kiss or fight and tell.
Wes parked the Highlander in the staff lot and climbed out of the SUV, mind still on Maura. Early summer left the campus looking somewhat like an immaculate ghost town with a skeletal staff presence and far less student traffic than usual. He beeped the doors locked and turned away from the vehicle, determined to keep moving. One foot in front of the other until the day was over.
Maura had accused him of being a daydreamer, and while it probably appeared that way to others, he didnât think so. He wasnât mentally checked out on a daily basis. Wes gave one hundred percent to the job, to his kids, his family, even Maura. He had just never given his wife one hundred percent of his heart. He was focused, driven, though on the current job as the director of the financial aid department at the local university, there wasnât room to grow. Heâd considered a career change, though now he wondered if Maura would see that as further proof that he was restless, looking for change, for something better.
June mornings were particularly pleasant. Right now, the campus quad was still richly green, and the well-kept lawns and flower gardens boosted his spirits. Maura loved being on campus; she loved the riot of colorful flowers. Sheâd even suggested they do something with more color in their own landscaping. Heâd vetoed that idea, told her simple foliage was better, more elegant.
Which was dumb, considering their house was certainly not elegant. Homey and definitely nice and comfortable, but not ostentatious. Not something that wouldnât benefit from some perfectly planted tulips or daisies.
Voices carried to him from the tennis courts, and Wes shot a quick glance that way. Felt a reluctant smile play at his lips when he saw two kids too young to be college students batting a tennis ball around. In the earliest days of summer vacation, their cheeks were only beginning to look pink, and their outrageous laughter was like a mechanical grip on Wesâ heart.
Mel hadnât wanted to go to college, not if her desire to attend school overseas didnât work out. In the summer theyâd spent together, Wes had stupidly tried to talk her into it. What had he been thinking, he wondered now. Well, since it was the little head that had done the thinking that summer, it wasnât such a mystery.
