Chapter 15

REMINDING

The cafeteria was empty, not even the caretaker was there to interrupt my meal. Everything tasted like ash in my mouth, and I felt something I couldn't quite explain. It wasn't guilt, it wasn't exactly pain, but it was there, turning around in my stomach. I played with some fries on the plate.

“Sasha gets like that sometimes,” Noah said, “don't take it personally.”

“I didn't,” I told him. “I was just thinking about Ezra.” And how without even knowing him he messed up my life. Not that I had much good going for me. I dipped a fry in ketchup. I just missed Clara and Fern. They were the only good thing I’d had. “Did he kill someone that she knew?”

Noah paused as if he wasn't sure if he should tell me. I knew he shouldn't, but I wanted to know. Soon he answered, “He took someone from everyone.”

“So that's a yes then,” I muttered, tossing the fry into my mouth. As I forced myself to swallow I realized what Noah's words really meant. “You...?”

He nodded, and his glamour completely dropped. His ears stuck out further, and his eyes brightened. “I lost my friend, a long time ago when he was really bad.”

“You mean he was worse?”

“He wasn't this secretive,” Noah said. “He was a powerful witch, and he knew how to use it. The world could have been torn apart by him, but he...just stopped. Some thought he’d died, or gone into hiding.” Noah shrugged. “Maybe that was when he was made into a vampire.”

I looked back at my plate. “I'm sorry about your friend.”

“It was Sasha's brother,” Noah explained.

I flinched. That explained a lot. So my father killed her brother? It was no wonder she hated me; I was amazed she hadn't killed me yet. My dream came to mind. “Can a witch see the future?”

And did my future involve Sasha ripping my throat out? Noah chuckled, but I could tell it was forced. “No,” he said. “They claim they can in crystal balls, but they can't see the future. They could read tarot cards though.”

“Kay,” I said. We were silent a moment, neither of us moving. The only sound in the cafeteria was our breath coming in calm, controlled puffs. “What else did he do?”

“He just wants revenge,” Noah said. “Revenge for his wife, for you, for your brother.”

I faced him. “Can I meet him? My brother?”

Noah bit down on his lower lip. “It might now be best right now...he was raised by Ezra for most if his life...”

“So he works with Ezra?”

“Not exactly,” Noah admitted, “Legion isn't sure if—”

“Legion doesn't seem sure of anything,” I said. “They thought they killed my mom and look where that got them. Does Ezra even know it was actually me that killed her, and not them?”

“It doesn't matter,” Noah said, trying to keep my calm. I could feel my heart rate rising, feel it beat against my ribs and vibrate through my entire body. Each and every one of my limbs began to feel sore, aching, wanting to release something.
