“Omigod. What a loser,” Cara said as we shared a plate of fries at Johnny’s after school. Both of our boyfriends had after-school commitments, so we were killing time waiting for them—a first for us. “Doesn’t he realize how pathetic he is? He practically threw himself at you.”

“Well, who could blame him?” I joked, as I dipped a fry into a ketchup-mustard mix. “But seriously, Cara. The whole time I was petrified that Nate would come around the corner and see us and think that all the rumors about me were true.”

“He wouldn’t think that,” Cara said.

“Why not? He has to be a little bit paranoid after reading all that crap on the Daze. A little visual confirmation might be all he’d need.” I felt ill just thinking about it and pushed my fries away. Why had I ever volunteered to help Ian? If only I had never raised my hand that day in class, I wouldn’t have to deal with this now.

“Layla, you didn’t do anything wrong,” Cara pointed out. “You were just telling Mr. Can’t Take No For An Answer to back off. It’s completely fine.”

“I hope you’re right,” I said.

Cara took a sip of her soda, staring me down. “What is it, Layla? Why are you so paranoid?”

Because before I decided for sure Nate was the one for me, I did cheat on him. Twice—with Drew. Because I thought about cheating on him with Ian. And because I’m so, so scared he’s going to find out and hate me.

“I don’t know,” I said, squirming. “Nate and I are having such a good time I guess I’m just…waiting for something bad to happen.”

Cara gave me a sympathetic look. “Don’t let Ian do this to you,” she said. “You and Nate are a great couple. Nothing bad is going to happen.”

“Promise?” I asked hopefully.

Cara grinned confidently. “Promise.”

I only wished I felt as sure as she did.
