Chapter Twenty
I came home later to a sticky note from my mom stuck to the fridge.
Having dinner with Silas, be home late. Love you xoxo
I sighed, pulling it down off the fridge, knowing that I was going to have to apologize to my mom for some of the things I said this morning. I understood that she wanted what was best for me, but there had to be a way she could do that without talking down to me about relationships. Itâs not that I didnât appreciate my momâs perspective. She certainly had a laundry list of things not to do when it came to love, but right now, what I needed was for her to support me while I tried to navigate what might always be one of the most complicated people Iâve ever met.
I decided not to think about that now or the accruing number of missed calls and unread texts I had from my dad on my phone. Instead, I decided to go get ready for my first-ever double date.
After battling with myself over what to wear, I ended up in a plunging v-neck white spaghetti strap bodysuit with the back cut out. I paired it with a pair of high-waisted dark wash jeans and black boot heels. It was simple, but I had a feeling Eli would like it.
I braided the purple strands of my hair and pinned them behind loose waves. I finished off with natural-looking makeup, and by 6 pm, I was done just in time for the doorbell to ring. I skipped down the stairs, excited to see Eli dressed up, and when I pulled the door open, I smiled. He didnât disappoint.
Dressed in a light blue short sleeve button-up shirt and black jeans, he had one arm leaned up against the doorframe. I noticed he didnât button his shirt all the way and didnât have an undershirt on either. He made it so I could see his bluebirds peeking out, and I immediately knew, he dressed for me too. He had sunglasses on when I opened the door, but he quickly pulled them off, his eyes wide and his mouth gaping. He looked me up and down and smiled.
âWow,â he breathed out. My cheeks turned a shade of crimson red.
âYou like it?â I asked, looking down.
âLike it?â He stepped towards me and wrapped his hands around my waist. When his fingers connected with the bare skin on my back, he laughed. âI think this is my new favorite outfit,â he smiled before bending down and kissing me lightly on the lips. I pulled back and smiled.
âYeah?â I whispered seductively. He smirked.
âOh, definitely. You think we can be a few minutes late?â He started to carry me backward into the house, putting his lips on mine again. I laughed, pushing him back softly.
âNo,â I protested. âLetâs go,â I grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him out the door.
âFine,â he huffed as he shut the door behind him. âBut Iâm definitely getting the honor of taking that outfit off of you later,â he said, intertwining our fingers.
