Chapter Sixteen
MARY, BABY CHLOE AND FAMILY are all at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the largest hospital in the area and in Virginia for that matter. It takes a bit of time to navigate the labyrinth of passageways to find Mary’s room. I feel myself getting more and more anxious as we walk through the maze of corridors. I’m about to meet Nate’s family. That shouldn’t make me nervous, but it does. It’s not like we’re a couple. Maybe Martin said that Nate loves me just to mess with me. Still, I can’t shake my nervous feeling.
Nate knocks quietly and the door is opened by Cecilia. She squeals with delight at the sight of us and hugs me tightly. She makes such a fuss over me that I don’t have time to be anxious about anything. Introductions are made all around. Fortunately for all on the ward, Mary was given a private room. It’s quite crowded in here with Cecilia, Ben, the MacAlisters and of course, Mary, Chloe and Michael, Mary’s husband. Michael’s parents have just left to grab some dinner and it’s a good thing or they would have to install bleachers in here to hold all the spectators.
Mary looks exhausted, but I think she’s beautiful. Her hair is lighter than Nate’s and wavy. She has it pulled back in a ponytail. Her eyes are the same chocolate brown. She still seems to be glowing from either the birth or the excitement of having a beautiful baby girl feeding at her breast as her loving husband looks at the pair with pure devotion. Watching the new little family brings tears to my eyes. It’s a beautiful sight.
Mr. MacAlister looks a little older than I remember from his television interviews. It could be the lack of make-up or more likely that it has been a few years since he retired. He looks great for his age. He’s tall, over six feet at least. His skin has reached the aged patina that only comes from spending a lifetime outdoors. Not the kind of leathery skin from too much sunbathing, just the healthy look that one achieves from spending a good amount of time outside. His eyes are the same chocolate brown as Nate’s and just as vibrant. His hair is cut short, also like Nate’s, except that it has turned gray with the passing years.
I find Mrs. MacAlister to be wonderful, even if a bit overwhelming. Mrs. MacAlister and Cecilia could be sisters. The only noticeable difference is that Mrs. MacAlister, who insists she be called Barbara, has long, straight gray hair that she’s currently wearing in a topknot at the back of her head. She has the same round figure and happy manners that made me so comfortable when I first met Cecilia.
Cecilia is wearing tan slacks, a white blouse and an eggplant jacket. A scarf rounds out the ensemble and adds a splash of color. Ben is wearing dress slacks and a collared shirt. It looks like they came from church. Barbara and C.
