CHAPTER 21

“Refill, please.” Dakota held out her empty glass to Corey.

“Justice waits for no one,” Leila said meekly. Everyone looked deflated after Jack’s sudden departure. She’d barely been there for half an hour, and that was after making them wait for forty-five minutes.

“I’m so bummed.” Dakota knocked back her freshly poured glass in a few large gulps.

Corey stared at her, his head tilted. “Booze is not the answer.” He reached for the bottle for another refill, though.

Dakota thought about the toy she’d bought—the surprise she had in store for when Jack stayed the night.

“I thought I had a busy work life,” Mac said.

“She didn’t even have time to moon over you.” Jamie shot her wife a grin.

“Jack was way too busy making eyes at Dakota to be impressed by any of us,” Izzy said. “For what it’s worth, I think she’s really into you.” Izzy sent Dakota a warm smile.

“Which begs the question,” Leila said. “How into the hot cop are you? Considering, you know, things.”

“We can call a spade a spade,” Corey said. “I’m married to her ex-husband. We can all speak our truth here.”

“Judging by how annoyed I am that she got called away, I’d say I’m fairly into her,” Dakota said.

“Even though she’s a woman?” Mac asked.

Dakota just nodded. In this moment, it didn’t matter that Jack was a woman—the only thing that mattered was that she wasn’t there.

“But,” she continued. “Jack’s been very honest with me from the start. She doesn’t date, or do relationships, precisely because of the life she leads. She’s married to her job. At least now I know exactly what she means.” Dakota straightened her spine. She’d already had enough of feeling sorry for herself. The evening was a dud, but her friends were still here.

“Regardless of her job and what she wants,” Jamie said. “Do you think you could actually fall in love with her?”

In a heartbeat, Dakota thought—knew for certain, in fact—but didn’t want to admit to her friends. She tried to shrug off the question, but she found she couldn’t. “I don’t know but, either way, it’s too complicated. She has her job. I have the girls.” And I thought I was straight. “We want different things. I should probably put some distance between us before it becomes too difficult.” What a ridiculous thing to say while all Dakota wanted was for her phone to ring so Jack could tell her she was on her way back. Or maybe they should just have one final, epic night together, before going their separate ways. Dakota truly didn’t know. All she knew right now was that it sucked that Jack was a cop.

“I’m no expert,” Izzy said, “but as far as I can tell, it’s pretty obvious.”

“They’ve just got the hots for each other, babe,” Leila said.

“They’re in lust,” Corey added. “Sometimes, it becomes more. Mostly, it doesn’t.” He leaned over and put his hand on Dakota’s shoulder. “That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a chance.”

“Oh god, this whole thing,” Dakota said on a sigh.
