THE WEEK WENT BY with surprising speed. Mason spent most of his time on the range, and although Gina missed him tremendously, she was glad he wasn’t around to witness her clumsiness at riding.
The first day, she fell off a placid old mare that was hardly moving. The only injuries were black-and-blue marks on her rear end and a distinct blow to her pride.
She kept at the lessons, though. Jennifer was a patient teacher, and it buoyed Gina to gain a sense of the balance and rhythm of riding. She wasn’t sure why it seemed so important to learn, except that she wanted to absorb as much of the ranch experience as possible.
Bonita and Nana loved playing with the babies, which enabled Gina to take some time off. She taught them both infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation, using a doll from the nursery in place of the anatomically correct model she would have demonstrated with at the hospital.
She hoped the technique would never have to be used. But it was a valuable precaution.
On Wednesday, Gina drove into town and found yarn and a pattern for a man’s sweater. Between caring for the children, riding and knitting there didn’t seem to be a spare moment after that.
The best part was seeing the way the little girls gained weight and motor coordination. Thanks to the stimulation and attention they enjoyed on the ranch, they were making up for any lags caused by their lengthy hospitalization.
Mason continued to work long days, often into the evening. He always took time to visit his nieces, though, early in the morning and during their nighttime feedings.
He would sit beside Gina, holding Daisy or Lily and plying a bottle expertly. He would talk about the cattle or the ranch business or the girls in a friendly, companionable tone.
He never touched Gina, except by accident. He never discussed his brother’s death, or his sister’s custody battle, or how long he expected Gina to stay at the Blackstone Bar.
He didn’t do anything to make her fall more deeply in love with him. But she did, anyway.
