“I GIVE UP,” Sara said. “It’s all fallen apart, and I can’t make it right again.”

“But, chérie,” Juliet said, handing her a tissue. “Everything is perfect.”

“Weren’t you listening? Didn’t you hear what he said to me?”

Juliet nodded. “I heard every word, Sara. And more. I heard what he meant.”

“Oh, no. I don’t even want to go there. You’re the dangerous one. Not me.”

“Did you or did you not get soundly kissed yesterday?”

Sara nodded, glad the door to the office was closed so no passerby would hear this conversation.

“Did you or did you not have two men squabble over you?”

She nodded once more.

“And did you or did you not feel your heart come to life?”

Sara reluctantly nodded again. “Immediately followed by its quick and untimely death.”

“Your heart is anything but dead, chérie. It’s very much alive, and if you listen carefully, it will tell you what you must do.”

“I assume you can hear it from all the way over there, right?”

Juliet smiled. The phone rang, and while Juliet spoke about business, Sara tried to listen to her heart. What should she do? Give up? Join the convent? Find a hobby that would comfort her in her old age, like knitting or stamp collecting?

“What you must do is finish the course,” Juliet said as soon as she was off the phone. “Only now, you must change your focus.”

“To whom?”

“Matthew, of course.”

Sara couldn’t believe her ears. “Are you crazy? He told me in no uncertain terms he wasn’t interested in me.”

“That’s what he said. Not what he meant.”

“So he was lying?”

“Not exactly lying. It was more that he didn’t know the truth himself.”

“And that truth is—?”

“He’s already half in love with you, Sara.”

“Right. The bottom half.”

Juliet laughed. “You listen to me. I’m not wrong about this. Today you will go to his office. Find out what he likes, what he doesn’t like. Mirror his movements when you see him next. Touch his arm. Pay attention to him. Just follow the steps, darling. Follow the steps. Love is waiting at the end of the road.”
