I looked at the image on the screen. A pretty thirteen-year-old girl, who was trying too hard to look like she was eighteen, stared back at me, smiling shyly. She had straight, long, dark hair and wore a tight bright pink vest. Like many her age she’d also gone a bit crazy with her makeup.

Other pictures in Rachel’s personal gallery showed her in shorts and with an exposed stomach, the sort of pictures most parents – had they seen them – would have removed in a flash.

At thirteen, Rachel was, according to Facebook’s regulations, just old enough to have an account. She hadn’t bothered with any privacy settings. What for? Surely that was the whole point of social networking?

Joining Facebook is like joining a party in an infinitely sized room, where the entire world’s population can come and go as they please, and where it’s possible to talk to any one of them in private about any subject in the known universe.

There was a lot of competition for attention and time was short, so the sooner people knew all about Rachel the better. Then she could get down to the interesting stuff. Rachel used her full name and quickly began ‘Friending’ people she didn’t know. She listed her favourite music, movies, subjects and celebrities and joined a dozen groups.

Rachel then created a photo gallery, starting with the classic Facebook portrait, shots taken with a phone held at arm’s length. She quickly grew more confident and tried her best to look older, exposing more and more skin.

After school, she’d dive in through the door and run up to her room, logging on to AOL, Facebook and MySpace at the same time. Messages were answered, friends were poked; in no time she was fielding several conversations at once in chat rooms packed with thousands of other children her age.

Melanie may not have hit Rachel, she may not have been nasty or cruel, but she had become so wrapped up in her own problems that she had become guilty of neglect. Unintentional, perhaps, but neglect nevertheless. Neither Melanie nor her husband had paid any attention to Rachel’s online activities. This was like letting her roam alone through Soho late at night.

Joe had two goals.

The first was to have sex with Rachel.

The second was to record it on film.
