The bell for dinner rings pretty much immediately, and York looks awkward. “We should go down,” he says.

“Sure. Of course.” My belly rumbles right on time, and he chuckles.

We gather our clothes and dress, occasionally exchanging shy smiles. We hear the thump of feet on the stairs as York’s brothers make their way down too. As we’re about to leave the room, he puts his hand on the handle and pauses. “So…this was…” He grins, and I want to pinch his cheeks, he’s so cute.

“I know,” I say, grinning back.

“But…I’m not sure how we should be…downstairs in front of everyone else.”

“Are you planning on telling your mom and your brothers…not now I mean but…”

“Yeah,” he says quickly. “Of course.”

“Then I guess that we go down as friends and when you’re happy to be ‘out’ about us then you let me know.”

York smiles, dropping a kiss on my lips that has me melting. “Sounds good. There’s just a lot more politics here than usual.”

“YORK.” There’s a bellow from downstairs. “DANNA.”

I guess we’re late. I smooth my rumpled hair as we make our way downstairs, and as we enter the kitchen, all eyes turn to us. I don’t know what York’s facial expression is saying, but I can’t stop myself from smiling. Xsander winks and so does Xane. Samuel looks angry. Zack is concentrating on serving his food. Tommy and Trent both seem amused. And the W triplets, well, they look like they need some love. I take my usual place at the table and smile at Wade, then Walker and William. Their expressions seem to brighten. I guess I need to find a moment to talk to them. They were so kind after Joe’s, and I want to know what their thinking now things are developing with their other brothers.

We eat and rather than the discussion revolving around me, they keep it about ranch business. Jackie has a lot to say about the town fair that is happening in two weeks. She’s got jam and pickles to sell and is entering a baking competition too. It sounds like a lot of fun, and I’m sad that I’m going to miss it. Thinking about going home doesn’t make me happy. I love pop, but our house is so quiet, and we can go days without a visitor. We eat with the television on. I’m going to miss the hustle and bustle and noise of this dinner table. I’m going to miss the warmth of this enormous family.

“Can you bake?” Jackie asks me, jolting me from my thoughts.

“My momma taught me how to bake some,” I say.

Jackie looks pleased. “Everyone should know how to bake. There’s nothing that brings joy to people’s faces more than delicious cake.”

“I don’t know about that,” Tommy says. “I can think of plenty of things that would bring more joy to my face than cake.” He nudges me under the table, and I want to laugh, but feel like I shouldn’t. This is obviously Jackie’s passion, and I wouldn’t want her to think that I wasn’t taking her seriously.
