Alekstared at the doorway through which Luanne had just trundled, feeling like … like… Like ten kinds of fool, as Odella would say.

His grandmother's words exploded in his brain— Responsibility without emotional commitment is worthless.

But, if that was the best he could do…? Surely that counted for something.

Then why the hell had he taken her into his arms? True, all he'd meant to do was comfort her, to try to ease her obvious distress—distress which he'd brought on with his truly brilliant timing, he thought with a wince—but all he'd succeeded in doing was upsetting her even more. He knew what the boundaries were, damn it, and yet he'd violated them all the same. And for what? What?

For the second time that day, frustration roared through him, made all the worse since he couldn't get a handle on what, exactly was making him feel treacherously close to smashing something. His own head, preferably. More pent-up than he'd ever been before a race, he began to pace the floor, the intricate pattern of the Moroccan carpet blurring underfoot as he dug his fingers into the back of his neck. Dear God—if he hadn't known why he'd never let a woman get to him before this, he sure as hell knew why now. In the space of a few hours he'd managed to bring a smile to Luanne's lips and tears to her eyes. The first had made his heart swell with a kind of joy unlike anything he'd ever known; the second had nearly torn him to pieces.

And as buffeted as he felt by these rampaging, totally off-the-chart emotions, there wasn't a bloody thing he could do to stop them. Alek laughed aloud, the laugh of a man perilously close to losing it.

How the bloody hell did heexpect to rule a country when he couldn't even rule himself?
