Chapter 40

Samantha

The work day flies by. As I head to my condo, my excitement for Lucas’s call continues to build within me, reaching epic heights. I can actually feel myself vibrating in anticipation. I hope our call will help us reconnect and recalibrate whatever we have going on between us.

When I step into my condo, I order a brussel & kale salad and chocolate chip cookie from Archer Farm Stand so I can have it delivered before Lucas calls. I busy myself with meaningless tasks around my condo, desperately trying to distract my restless mind.

Before I know it, my doorbell chimes, letting me know they have delivered my dinner. After retrieving it, I set myself up on my couch with my salad, water, cookie, and laptop. Moments later and mid-bite, I receive a FaceTime request from Lucas and my heart beats frantically in my chest. I swallow, check my teeth, and take a few calming breaths before I accept the call. Instantly his beautiful face fills my screen, and I can’t help but smile like a deranged person. Thankfully, his face is adorned with the same look. I’m giddy and I laugh. He tips his head to the side, silently questioning. His eyes dilate when I touch my mouth. “I’m sure I’m smiling like an idiot,” I say.

“Well, that makes two of us.” He laughs in his deep timbre that does weird things to my insides. “You’re beautiful, Samantha.”

I have missed him so much, which I don’t understand. We barely know each other, but I can’t help my feelings. “I’ve missed you, Lucas,” I tell him.

His smile grows even bigger and my knees go weak. Good thing I’m already sitting down, or else I’d be on the floor.

“Babe, I’ve missed you, too. I am so sorry that we haven’t been able to connect until now. But right now, I’m all yours,” he reassures me.

Over the next few hours, we talk about everything and nothing, and I finally feel at ease for the first time in a week. It’s obvious from all the flirting and suggestions he’s making that Lucas is still into me. And I tell myself that this week was a bump in the road and we can do this. If we make the effort, the distance between us will be tough, but not impossible.

Before we say goodbye, I notice Lucas suddenly gets nervous. Instead of making eye contact like he’s done all night, his focus has shifted down. He’s even wringing his hands together.

“Is everything okay?” I hesitantly ask. I thought our conversation had gone well, and we were back on track, but his sudden change sets off alarms in my head and my stomach knots.

“Yeah. I guess,” he spits out.

“You guess?” I ask, trying to not sound defensive.

He shifts his position and I notice the tension he’s holding in his shoulders. I feel like I’ve been side swiped. What am I missing? Could I completely be misreading the chemistry between us? I tell myself that I need to let him answer before I board the train to crazy town.
