Chapter Ten

Three days later a text ringtone shattered Jessica’s concentration. She had spent the past ninety minutes going over the grant application. She glanced at the sender’s name, and picked up the cell phone.

Sawyer: Good morning, gorgeous.

Jessica: Good morning, sweet prince.

Sawyer: I thought it was good night, sweet prince.

Jessica: So, you’re familiar with the Bard?

Sawyer: I happen to love Shakespeare.

Jessica: Don’t you ever sleep?

Sawyer: Why?

Jessica: Your emails are time stamped after midnight leading me to believe you’re really a vampire.

Sawyer: No such luck. If I were I would bite your neck and we’d live forever.

Jessica: I just finished reading the grant narrative and I can’t believe how you’ve improved on our language.

Sawyer: It’s called techie talk.

The prior years’ grant proposals had each taken five committee members more than a month to complete. Sawyer had done the job in three days. His budget included a breakdown for new computers and printers for technology labs for the three campuses, personal iPads for high school seniors and smartboards for elementary classrooms. He had also included a line in the budget for a full-time technology instructor and a part-time IT person.

Sawyer: Now that the grant’s completed are you ready to head to the Big Apple?

Jessica: When do we leave?

Sawyer: Sunday. My folks, Rachel and the boys are leaving for Hawaii tomorrow morning so there’s nothing keeping me here for the next month.

Jessica: How long do you expect us to stay?

Sawyer: As long as you want. We’ll drive up and stay at my place. That way you can bring Bootsy.

Now she knew why he’d worked overtime to revise the application. Sawyer planned to combine their trip to New York with business and pleasure, and Jessica mentally outlined what she had to do before closing up the house. She had to go to the post office to stop mail delivery and alert her neighbor that she would be away for a while.

Jessica: Thank you!

Sawyer: Talk to you later, doll face.

Jessica: Later, gorgeous.

She sent Logan an email, attaching the proposal and a brief message that she was going to be away and would reconnect with him when he returned to the States. She reinserted the thumb drive into the port and programmed the printer to print enough copies for each committee member.

It had taken Jessica nearly an hour to decide what to wear on her date with Sawyer. One dress appeared a little too risqué and another too drab. She finally chose a navy blue silk-shantung pantsuit with a white silk halter blouse and the heels she’d worn to the retirement dinner. She’d washed her chemically straightened hair, let it air dry and then styled the short strands in a mass of curls with a curling iron. Pearl studs, a matching single strand around her neck and a light cover of makeup completed her beauty regimen just before the doorbell rang.

Bootsy raced into the bedroom, barking incessantly as she gathered her evening purse and keys. “It’s all right, baby boy. That’s Sawyer.” She patted his head.
