By the end of the year Jews were forbidden from holding public office, from the arts and entertainment industries and from journalism. Jewish children were being barred from state-run schools.

Students burnt Jewish and other ‘UnGerman’ books with the encouragement of Goebbels. Einstein, Freud, Hemingway, Proust, London, Marx – the works of these and many more were consigned to the flames with youthful zeal.

Some 20 000 volumes were destroyed. University professors, afraid, opportunistic or genuinely enthusiastic, pledged allegiance to the ideals of Aryanism. Those who did not were sacked.
