WHY ARE YOU HOLDING on to the clothes?

Victor could only imagine what Karl would make of his decision to box up Marisol’s clothes, along with her husband’s, and stash them in a box next to his sofa.

He’d put the bags in the van. But not the clothes.

Karl would probably suggest some sort of Freudian obsession with her, as if there were anything remotely sexual about his relationship with Mariah.

Karl only understood the baser emotions.

He was going to get rid of the clothes. But first, he needed time to go through everything, make sure he didn’t miss any identifying items in the pockets. Dumping the items in a charity box was smarter than just throwing them into the woods. In the charity box, they’d be a few items among many. In the woods, they’d be vital clues to what may have happened to a pair of missing persons.

But what if Karl got caught last night, dumping the truck and the boat? The sheriff might be on the way to the cabin right now, tipped off by Karl. The next car he passed could be a cruiser, lights flashing, barreling down the two-lane access road on their way to his house in the woods. What would he do if that happened? How could he stop such a disaster?

Victor had listened carefully to the morning news on the radio, fearing the worst, but if Karl had been picked up by the police, the local stations hadn’t found it newsworthy enough to report. More likely, Karl had managed to dump the truck and boat safely.

But that didn’t really change the fact that sooner or later, when they realized just who this person named Mariah really was, they’d connect her to Victor and come looking.

He had to be very sure there was nothing in his house or the woods surrounding it that could incriminate him.

Including a box of clothes stashed next to his sofa.

Squaring his jaw with determination, he pulled a U-turn and headed back home.
