Chapter Seven
Unsure what to do next, Kat stopped a server and picked up a glass of white wine. She took a sip, but the alcohol failed to calm her nerves.
Kat studied the sea of faces around her. Men and women dressed to the nines in their best evening wear. She couldnât wait for this charity event to be over.
Two weeks had passed since she officially moved in with Angelo. Those fourteen days had passed by in a blur. By now, one would think Kat was on her way adapting to her new life but sheâd gone from being her fatherâs silent wallflower to Angeloâs society wife.
This wasnât the first event she attended without her husband on her arm. Angelo promised heâd make an appearance if his meeting finished early but Kat doubted it would happen. Once again, she had to suffer through this gala alone.
Kat sounded a little dramatic, sure, but all she wanted to do was change out of her uncomfortably tight dress, put on her pajamas, and slide into bed. Sheâd watch a little TV while waiting for Angelo to return. But no, Kat had a duty to fulfill.
âGood turnout, eh?â Theo asked by her shoulder.
Angeloâs second never left her side during these functions. At first, Kat had been annoyed by the attached bodyguard, but realized Angelo probably just wanted to ensure her safety. After several conversations, Theo had warmed up to her a little, or so Kat liked to think.
She found out Theo had been Angeloâs second for more than a decade. Theo, like most of the men who worked for her husband, would give their lives for their Don if need be. She didnât think her fatherâs men felt the same way about him.
âSure,â Kat agreed. She sighed. âCanât wait for tonight to be over.â
âSame here. No offense, but I didnât sign up for this,â Theo grumbled. Theo gestured to the crowded room.
âNone taken, Iâm sure you prefer being by Angeloâs side,â she said. âNot shadowing me all the time.â
âProtecting you is important, too,â Theo said, surprising her.
âYou sound like you actually mean those words, Theo,â Kat said with some amusement.
Theo scowled. He seemed to consider his next words with care. âI thought I wouldnât like you, you being the daughter of Don Aldo Marino and all, but youâre different from your father. Plus, I havenât seen Angelo this happy in a long time.â
âHeâs happy?â Kat asked, hungry to know if Theo was simply pulling her leg or telling her the truth. âWith me? Iâm satisfactory?â
Theo laughed. âYou donât have to worry about whether or not youâre pleasing him. The boss is clearly smitten with you. Incoming viper.â
Theo jerked his head to two approaching women. Kat recognized the mayorâs wife. She flashed her and the second woman a friendly smile. Kat used to have trouble with small talk but now, she was practically an expert at talking about nothing important to incredibly wealthy people.
There was a trick to it, Kat discovered. Kat only had to pretend to be listening intently and only respond at the appropriate moments.
