CHAPTER 24

"LANA!"

Shane's urgent voice halted her in her progress down the hallway toward the bedroom where she'd fully intended to work out a plan for leaving. She turned to find Shane rushing up to her.

"Hey, lemme talk to you," he said, catching her by the arm. "Joe's on the phone. He won't bother us." He opened a door.

Linnea's eyes widened. "Uh, okay." She followed Shane into what turned out to be the entertainment room.

"Look, I don't know what you're doing with him," Shane said, plopping down on a vintage sofa. "But he ain't gonna treat you good. He might shower you with gifts and all that crap, but you gotta listen to me. He never forgets things even if it looks like he does. And he's real crazy about us, all his sibs. Our folks have been gone since he was seventeen and he was all we had. He got us all out of foster care and under his guardianship and he takes that shit seriously. You should leave him, Lana."

Linnea felt a wave of guilt as she faced him from the other side of the sofa. Shane really thought she was Lauren. Deceiving him in these circumstances seemed hardly fair. "Shane, your brother is with me for a reason," Linnea said carefully. "He remembers what happened to you when you were fourteen."

"Yeah, I was fucked up. That was some messed-up shit. But you weren't my pusher, Lana. I never thought of you like that. You were a kid like me."

Linnea didn't know what to say. She felt her way cautiously. "That's nice of you to say, Shane, but I don't think your brother agrees with you about the girl you knew. I think he thinks that girl was a lot older than you. That she should have known better. And I agree. That girl made some pretty unforgivable mistakes. You—" She swallowed. "You got cut up. You almost died."

And your brother is avenging you with me. And if I were smart I'd tell you that and ask you to help me.

She didn't know why she didn't do just that. Maybe because she doubted his ability to stand up to his brother.

More likely, though, it was simply Jonas's power over her. The idea of bringing anyone else into their complicated relationship at this juncture felt wrong. Very Stockholm syndrome.

"I know." Shane's expression was stubborn. "He said I was a target. It ain't true, I never believed you'da done that."

"Drugs do crazy things to people," Linnea said gently. "They make them act out of character."

"But you never took that stuff. Remember? And you wouldn't let me touch your shit. You said it'd mess me up bad."

Lauren had said that? Now she really had to talk to Lauren.

"What you took did mess you up," she reminded him. It hit her with a sense of wonder that Shane had a soft spot for her. Or at least, for Lauren. Why she couldn't fathom, but the implications were interesting.

As Linnea thought about those implications, an idea blossomed in her mind, brought hope.
