Chapter Eight

The worst thing about driving was the amount of time Jax had to reflect. And he had way too much to reflect on. The way he would have pummeled the man who had been after Emma. The guy might not have worked for Eric, but he didn't have good intentions toward Emma. And even though Jax's only proof was his gut, it was enough for him. Thankfully Rafe had been there to hold back his arm, and Jax was able to calm down enough to walk away.

It wasn't like Jax to lose his cool, ever. But he'd done so, and he moved his thoughts along before he could analyze why he'd lost his cool this time when many of his clients had been put in precarious situations and Jax had never felt the same way.

So his thoughts moved to the conversation he and Emma had just had. Jax knew Emma was trying to make him feel better after he'd complained about his privileged life (of course, he'd just done exactly what he couldn't stand others doing). But something about Emma made him want to open up about what he'd felt, even if it was petty. And Emma had helped him to feel anything but. Like his emotions and feelings were understood.

And even though he knew she hoped her words would lift his spirits, it wasn't in Emma to lie. So she must have felt some truth to what she'd said. She believed the world was a better place with him there. He shook his head at his ridiculousness. Of course she did. Emma probably wouldn't have wished any person out of existence, even the worst of their kind. That was the type of person Emma was.

Jax had traveled the world and nowhere on earth was there a heart like the one he'd gotten to know in the last few days. There was no woman like Emma Heathcliff. And he couldn't understand how a heart that was so pure could have come out of a world that he knew to be so corrupt. How she could treat him as not only an equal, but stand by his side with such sweetness, when he'd held onto feelings of animosity for so long?

She was an enticing enigma. But she wasn't his to explore.

"Where are we going?" Emma asked, thankfully interrupting his thoughts.

Had he really not taken the time to tell her? And she was only asking him now?

Jax knew he went into a mode when he worked where little could get through to him other than the thing he was focused on doing--protecting his employer. But if he had made a slip like that with any other client, they wouldn't have let him go two steps without demanding him to tell them. Emma had never demanded anything of him.

"Sorry, I should have told you. A little outside of Helena," Jax answered, hoping he sounded contrite. He knew he wasn't the best at apologies.

Emma smiled and then nodded, telling him all was forgiven. It would be easy to get good at giving apologies when they were accepted like that.
