Chapter 11

Nick watched warily as Alex moved swiftly to the sofa and sat down beside him. Alex’s body was visibly tense, and as he leaned in close to Nick and their knees brushed, Nick felt intensity vibrating through him.

“Are you absolutely sure you can kill your old boss?” Alex asked soberly. “Unlike Gray, loyalty means something to you. When the moment comes and you’re looking at him through your gun sight, can you pull the trigger?”

Nick’s emotions were turbulent as he considered the questions. It had been devastating to betray his teammates to the Medusas, who had only been planning to capture his brothers-in-arms. That was a far cry from planning to execute the man he’d worked for and been willing to die to protect.

Alex was speaking again. “...won’t hold it against you if you can’t do it, Nick. But I have to know now whether you can or can’t kill him. My life is probably going to depend on you following through if you tell me that you can take the shot.”

Nick nodded slowly, once. Twice. “You are correct. But here’s the thing. It will take both of us working together to take down Gray. There’s no telling which one of us will get the kill shot. But whichever one of us it is, neither of us dares hesitate to pull the trigger. With this man, we’ll only get one try at him. After that, he’ll kill us both and not think twice about it. To be blunt, you’re going to need my help.”

Alex laid a hand on Nick’s forearm, which tensed beneath the light touch of Alex’s palm. “No harm, no foul, Nick. If you don’t want to be part of taking down Gray, I can do it alone.”

He surged up off the couch, agitated. “No, you can’t! That’s what I keep trying to tell you! You still don’t get how dangerous a man he is, do you?”

Alex gazed up at him steadily, waiting him out. Alex knew him too well. He sensed that Nick was spoiling for a fight and had no intention of giving one to him.

He shoved a hand through his damp hair. “Hell, Alex. I’m afraid of him. And you’re a damned fool if you’re not.”

“Just because I’m afraid of someone, that doesn’t mean I can’t do my job and eliminate them.”

He glared at Alex. “Maybe. But you and I both know that being scared of a target bloody well makes it harder to succeed in taking them out.”

Alex shrugged. “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.”

“That’s not how it works. You’d better get your head straight before you ever tangle directly with Harlan Gray or he’ll use your mental weakness against you. He’ll chew you up and spit you out.”

“You think I’m not tough enough to do this job?” Alex challenged, rising to his feet and standing chest to chest with him.

Nick huffed. “That’s not what I said.”

“It’s what you implied,” Alex accused. “I took you in a fair fight, didn’t I?”

“It was an effing stalemate,” he ground out.
