Chapter Ten

“Have you seen Deborah?”

Cam looked up. Barb stood in his doorway, a strange look on her face.

“No,” he said. “I haven’t seen her since yesterday.”

“Neither have I. Which is really strange.”

Lucky was the word Cam would have chosen. Not that he didn’t want to see Deborah, because he did.

That was the problem.

He’d cut back on caffeine with no trouble at all, but apparently he had next to no willpower where one Deborah Clark was concerned. The fact that she popped in and out of his office with no advance warning didn’t help, either.

“Why is it strange?” Cam asked, since Barb was still standing there, squinting at him through her reading glasses and looking as if she expected some kind of response.

“Well, it’s Tuesday.”

He gave her what he knew had to be a blank look. What did Tuesday have to do with anything?

“It’s her volunteer day at Kids First.” His assistant took her glasses off and perched them on her gray head. “Deborah spends the morning helping out in the day-care center, but she’s usually back shortly after eleven—the kids eat lunch early, you know—and then she and I have tea and she tells me what funny things the toddlers got up to.”

“I see.” Actually, he didn’t. He’d never have pictured Deborah doing volunteer work. Cam frowned. “Well, she’s probably just running late.”

“I guess.” Barb sounded unconvinced.

He looked at her. “You’re thinking she’d have phoned if that were the case?”

“Yes, I am. Deborah’s very reliable.”

True. Not very long ago, he’d have guessed exactly the opposite. But in spite of her breezy, flippant tendencies, Deborah did what she said she was going to do.

Cam thought for a moment. “Do you know what time she goes to this day care?”

“I think around eight.”

“Well, I was here by then, and I never heard her come down.” Cam didn’t want to think about how early he’d gotten to work. Or why he’d finally given up trying to get any more sleep.

Soft curves. Sweet lips. Slender hands that drove him wild.

Brilliant blue eyes filled with dismay.

He and Barb looked at each other. “Okay, let’s go up there,” Cam suggested.

Their knock brought no response. The door was locked. Cam knocked again, louder, and this time they heard an insistent meowing, followed by a thump.

“That was too big a thump to be Libby,” Barb said. Alarm filled her hazel eyes. “We’ve got to get in there.” She tried the knob again. “Do you have a key?”

“No.” Cam examined the door. He was too worried about Deborah to care about correcting Barb’s assumption that the two of them were sexually involved. It was a moot point, anyway, since he planned to get involved with Deborah in the very near future. Furthermore, he suspected his assistant, who had seen yesterday’s paper, wouldn’t believe any denials.

A groan sounded inside the apartment.

Cam drew in a breath.

“Oh, it sounds like she’s hurt,” Barb wailed. “What are we going to do?”

“I’m going to pick this lock, which is fortunately pathetic.”

A few moments later, they were inside.
