Chapter 8
Dead silence assaulted Malone while Skylar retreated another step and then stood still as a stone. He tried to read her expression in the dimly lit room, but couldn't make out her features. As the smothering stillness grew, so did the terrible notion that perhaps he'd totally misread the situation. Totally misread her ...
He opened his mouth, for once in his life unsure what he should say, but unable to stomach another moment of the unnerving silence. However, before he could produce a word, she launched herself at him, the sudden onslaught toppling both of them onto the bed.
His breath flew out in a huff about a half-second before her mouth landed on top of his. Her rapacious tongue swept between his lips, startling him with bold strokes of possession. At the same time, he felt her hands loosening the belt of his robe. Then her fingertips skated across the muscles of his abdomen.
Gasping with the shockwave of pleasure that rolled through him, Malone broke the kiss and seized her wrist before her hand could roam lower. "Slow down a bit, luv."
Skylar pulled back enough so that Malone could raise himself up on one elbow and gaze into the inky depths of her eyes, where only a tiny edge of green showed around her wide pupils.
"Are you kidding me?" Her chest rose and fell with her rapid breaths. "From the moment I laid eyes on you in the Observation Lounge, it's been one thing after another. I figure we have ten, fifteen minutes tops."
His chuckle dried in his throat when he realized she was in earnest. With the lingering taste of her mint toothpaste still in his mouth, he sat up, and pulled her farther onto the mattress beside him.
"I promise you we have plenty of time." Over two hours by his estimation. "And then there's always afterward ..." He hadn't really meant to say that aloud. In fact, hadn't really considered until just this minute -- or had he? Ever since he'd swooped in and rescued her from her nasty Russian boss, Skylar seemed to have taken up permanent residence in both his conscious and unconscious mind.
Scooting closer to the bed's edge, he reached into the drawer of the nightstand and found the box of a dozen condoms. The box he'd specifically asked the room service waiter to include for him. He held it up so that she could see it. "Does this look like I'm in a hurry?"
Skylar's reply was a breathy whisper. "No." Then her lips settled on the side of his neck, and she nibbled a moist but fiery trail down to his collar bone, lingering over the little scar where he'd broken the pesky thing playing football long ago during his school days.
While she tugged the dressing gown off his shoulder, he loosened the belt on hers, reaching inside the garment to caress the satiny skin on her back before he pulled her against him. The incredible feel of her bare breasts rubbing against him nearly shattered his control.
