Chapter 8

“So this is where you’ve been hiding?”

The familiar feminine voice caused Matt’s heart to skip a beat. He stopped skating and turned around. Kristina stood on the edge of the frozen pond, wearing her black ice skates and holding a hockey stick in her hands.

He smiled as a deep desire for her stirred anew within his body. “You found me.”

She slid on her skates toward him. Up close, he noticed her wearing his wool sweater and hockey jersey over it. His clothes were too big for her, but he knew from the other day that feminine curves were hidden underneath. What would have happened if my father hadn’t called out my name?

“Let’s play, Logan,” she teased, tapping her hockey stick against his leg. “Me against you.”

Taking a step closer, he said, “Okay, Kristina Scott. Why don’t we make this game more interesting? If you win, I’ll make you breakfast in bed for a week.”

“And if you win?”

He stopped in front of her and lifted her chin with his thumb. “You let me kiss you again.”

She lifted her chin. “Deal.”

A brisk breeze swept against her short ponytail peeking out from her toque. The midday sunlight shone on her, creating an ethereal light. She left him breathless. He loved Kristina for her patience, kindness, and understanding. She had helped him get through the most terrible ordeal in his life when his mother died. For that, he would always be grateful, and nothing he did could stop him from wanting her. His brother’s wise words echoed in his head. “Get to know her.”

Matt already knew her—or so he thought.

“Ready to play or are you just going to stand there?” she teased with a smile on the lips he wanted to taste again.

Excitement ran through his blood as he chased Kristina down the iced pond. He was amazed at how she maneuvered the puck with ease. She impressed him with her fast and graceful skating.

In the golden sunlight lining the horizon, he followed her as she approached the net. Matt skated past her with speed, placing his body in front of the empty net. Kristina reached him and swung her hockey stick, making contact with the black puck. He tried stopping it with a basic maneuver, but it didn’t work.

She raised her hands victoriously in the air. “That’s one point for me.”

He couldn’t help but smile at her. “Where did you learn to play?”

Kristina looked at him. “Do you think Uncle Jasper only taught you and the other boys how to play hockey?”

He put his hands up. “I never knew.”

“There are a lot of things you don’t know about me, Logan,” she said, skating away.

If she had stuck him with a knife, the wound wouldn’t have been as painful. He saw a glimpse of hurt in her eyes and heard the pain in her voice. “Then tell me, Krissy,” he said, approaching her.

She faced him. “There’s nothing to say. Come on, Logan. Play hockey or make me breakfast in bed.” She passed beside him with the puck.
