Chapter Eighteen
They needed a break. Mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted, Gunner knew Maggie had to be at her breaking point. They’d been working on the Somnolett case for days without finding anything significant.
A night out, putting everybody and everything behind them, if only for a couple of hours, sounded like the perfect recipe.
He wanted to show her the city he’d come to love and call home. Though he’d only been here less than a year, he’d become immersed within the city’s cultural melting pot and found a place where he belonged.
Tonight, he’d wine and dine her, do a bit of the touristy stuff. Show her Jackson Square and some of the places everybody recognizes, but he’d also take her to the hidden gems, those places where the locals gathered. The real heart of the French Quarter.
“I’m ready.” Maggie’s voice drew him like the proverbial moth to her flame, and indeed she was all things warm and sultry, just like the city.
The vibrant red dress hugged her curves like a lover’s embrace, highlighting all the things he’d come to adore about her. Her glorious red hair was pulled back into an elegant up style, and he itched to dig his hands into it, pull the pins out and spread it out across her shoulders. Though it looked lovely, he wanted his wild, wanton princess, and hopefully he’d have her before the night was gone.
Small diamonds winked in her ears, the light catching and reflecting the sparkle, though they dimmed in contrast to her smile, which began as tentative, but grew into the sultry come-hither seductive smile of a siren, luring her prey. And he was a very willing victim. Black heels and a black clutch completed the outfit, and she did a little spin, allowing the flirty folds along the hem to whirl around, exposing enticing glimpses of her glorious legs.
“Wow. You look stunning.”
“Thanks. You look pretty great yourself.”
Instinctively his hand went to the tie, and he was glad he’d decided to make the extra effort, though the blasted thing would probably end up in his pocket before the night was half over.
Before he could utter another word, there was a soft knock on the door. He frowned. Didn’t matter who it was, he was not working tonight. This was his time with Maggie.
“Sir, Mr. Carpenter sends his regards, and that I’m at your disposal for the rest of the evening.” Etienne Boudreau, the youngest of the four Boudreau brothers stood there, dressed in a chauffeur’s uniform, and though he was straight-faced, the laughter in his eyes threatened to derail all Gunner’s plans. Trust Carpenter to think of everything, right down to having a member of Carpenter Security drive them around, and act as an unofficial bodyguard.
Taking the elevator, they emerged into the lobby and Gunner spotted the black SUV parked directly in front of the building, recognizing it immediately as Carpenter’s private car. He’d ridden in it before, and knew it was tricked out with all the bells and whistles, including bulletproof glass and puncture resistant tires.
