The effects of heroin depend on how it enters the bloodstream. A user who injects heroin with a needle will feel the effects faster than one who snorts it.

Some people take heroin, a sedative, with cocaine, a stimulant. Called “speed balling,” the practice is more dangerous than taking either drug by itself.

Some users combine heroin or another opioid with cocaine, a practice called “speed balling.” Thus, combined with any side effects from the opioid, one must deal with problems from the cocaine as well. This can also be more dangerous, as drugs taken in combination tend to magnify their side effects. For example, taking alcohol with marijuana, or any other drug, can be much more dangerous than drinking alcohol by itself. In this way, the opioid and the cocaine serve to magnify the effects of each other in what may easily be a deadly combination. The user combines a stimulant with the narcotic to cancel the effects of the drugs; the cocaine keeps a user from falling asleep or succumbing to the lethargy the narcotic brings on, and the opioid helps control the hyperactiveness that often occurs when cocaine is ingested.

Long-Term Effects of Opioids

There are many, more harmful effects that can occur when a person uses opioids for extended periods of time. Chronic users of heroin often have collapsed veins due to the constant injections. Heart infections, both in the lining and in the valves themselves, are also possible. Pneumonia may develop as well. This lung inflammation can be fatal when the immune system is already compromised, as in the case of someone living with HIV/AIDS.
