“They definitely think it was a pyro who started the fires,” Lindsay told Chloe, Charlie, and her two fellow fire-shapers, Austin and Kaci, over dinner. Lindsay had messaged the pyros on Parable about wanting to meet with them and Charlie had joined them while walking over from the dorm. He’d been sitting outside in the rain, wearing an Army-green rain poncho over each wing. The way he hopped up when they approached gave Chloe the impression he’d been waiting for her. Or maybe Austin, since they were friends. Yeah, probably Austin, she decided.

“How’d you find out?” Kaci asked. “Mr. Jordan wouldn’t tell me anything.”

Lindsay glanced around. They all huddled close around a table on the fringes of the dining hall, making sure no one could hear them. “My mom knows someone, she wouldn’t say who. But yeah, they didn’t find accelerant or anything at either scene, and security video shows it bursting into flames with no one near it.” She rolled her eyes and looked sulky. “Of course, I was the last one to walk past.”

Lindsay had been called away from Fire Training for tests of her abilities, and so far, they’d found no sign she could light fires by accident. Her mom and middle school had confirmed that there’d been no fires, mysterious or otherwise, around her. Since her ability had come on early, at just five, they thought it unlikely she’d start having accidents now.

“I’m just glad I wasn’t anywhere near it,” Austin said, and Kaci nodded in agreement.

“I don’t mean any offense,” Charlie said, “just looking at what-ifs—but is it at all possible that you did start them?”

Lindsay flushed red, but she looked sheepish rather than angry. “No, I’m positive. When the mower blew, I tried to wipe out the flames like I do with my own, just in case. It didn’t work.”

“Did you really think it could’ve been you?” Chloe asked, stunned Lindsay hadn’t mentioned it to her before.

Lindsay shook her head. “I just wanted to be like, a hundred percent sure. Now I am.”

“That was really smart.” Charlie looked impressed. “Where does that leave us, though? If it had to be a pyro but not one of you, that must mean . . .”

“There’s another pyro,” Chloe finished.

“Whoever it is,” Lindsay said, “they must be pissed that Zayden keeps putting their fires out.”

The others kept talking while Chloe got lost in thought about Zayden. How could he be such a hero and still a jerk? It was hard to reconcile. The image of him emerging from the building flashed through her mind, and she remembered a rescue from a fiery car wreck, too. Plus the visions that started when he touched her hand all involved smoke and fire. “Guys, you’re gonna think I’m crazy, but could the other pyro be Zayden?”

They all stared at her, confused.

“Why would you think that?” Lindsay asked.

“Think about it. Like you just said, Zayden put them both out. Or, at least, he put out the second one and helped with the first, using a water bottle.
