CHAPTER 17

Nael looked on as her mother scanned Rebecca’s head to locate the tracker. The woman seemed to not know that they were tagged. If they did, Rebecca would’ve told then where exactly it was. It was probably part of Larkz’s sadistic pleasure to watch the woman get killed when they break out, thinking they’ve escaped.

“I’ve got it,” Palmer said urgently. “They shot it up through the nose.” She handed the scanner to Nael. “Now we need to copy the frequency so we can trace its origin.”

Nael handed her mother the small recorder. She felt Rebecca’s eyes on her, but she ignored it. Too many emotions were coursing through her at that moment. There was simply no time now to shift through them all. She watched as Palmer hovered the tiny recording device over where the tracker was located in Rebecca’s nasal cavity

“There, it’s done. Now we need to find a way to get back in here tonight to track the frequency.”

“Larkz must have his station somewhere nearby. The frequency can’t be strong enough to carry all the way to his residence. I’m sure the guards would know its location.” She looked at Rebecca. The woman had not once taken her eyes of Nael. “I’ll need your help to get in tonight.”

“I’ll help anyway I can,” Rebecca said firmly, a trace of the indomitable senator shimmering through. The haunted, dejected look was slowly fading. “What do you need?”

Nael glanced at Palmer and back to Rebecca. “The only reason I would be down there at night would be for a woman. If I can get the guards to believe that I had some plans with you, they might not question my motives.”

Their eyes locked and held. Nael was immediately taken back to their only night together. They were not the same people anymore. She doubted they would ever be able to be that open and playful with each other again. Too much had happened since then and too much had been said that couldn’t be unsaid.

“I’ll do it.”

“Then it’s done. You need to go now, before anyone becomes suspicious.”

Nael quickly stepped closer. “Could I…” She took a deep breath. “Could I greet her?” Both Rebecca and Palmer stared at her in confusion. “I need to let her know that she’s safe now.”

Palmer blinked rapidly and Nael knew her mother was fighting her tears. Rebecca swallowed hard a few times before she reached out and took Nael’s hand. The moment her hand rested on Rebecca’s stomach, her heartrate sped up and she felt a warmth curling through her body. That was her child returning her greeting.

“Dura,” Nael whispered softly and there was a fluttering under her hand.

“That was you?” Rebecca asked incredulously. “I had this when you walked passed me earlier in the corridor. And now when you opened the door for me.”

“She knows when I’m near.”

Rebecca smiled. “Every time it happened, I thought she was sensing my fear.” She looked at Nael with regret in her eyes. “Had I known before, Nael, I would…”

Palmer’s voice was edged with anger when she spoke.
