Chapter 12
My brother told me to have a good day. So I went home.
-Ace to Codie
Ace
âHey,â I said softly to my brother-in-law. âCan you talk to Luke for me?â
Nico looked over at me with a raised brow.
âWhat for?â he asked curiously.
âA couple weeks ago, Codie put in her application to work at Kilgore Police Department as a crime scene tech,â I explained. âShe hasnât heard anything back, and I read in the newspaper today that the department was in desperate need of one. If they were really desperate, theyâd have called her back at least.â
Nico frowned. âReally? Youâre sure she applied?â
âOne hundred percent,â I agreed. âI talked to her about it yesterday on the way home from the movies. She applied and hasnât heard anything back.â
Nico frowned and pulled out his phone.
Seconds later his fingers were flying over the keys.
âI texted him, weâll see what heâ¦â He trailed off as his phone beeped in his hand. âThatâs weird. Heâs coming over.â
My brows rose.
âLukeâs coming over here?â I asked in curiosity.
Nico nodded.
I looked around his living room and grinned. âYou gonna clean up?â
Nico looked at the mess his kids had left in his house and shrugged. âLuke has his own kids. Iâm fairly sure he isnât going to notice the crumbs on the couch.â
He was right.
Ten minutes after his declaration, Luke came in without knocking, walked to Nicoâs fridge as if heâd done it before, and sat down on the couch with his beer, crumbs and all.
âYou should probably vacuum before your wife gets home,â Luke suggested as he sighed and leaned his head back against the couch. âIâm so tired.â
I looked at the big blond man and grinned. âYou look like you just got in a fight.â
âThatâs because I did,â he sighed. âIâm off duty as of five minutes ago. I thought Iâd use your bathroom to clean up so my wife doesnât see me and freak out like she did last time.â
Nico snorted. âYouâre more than welcome. I think your clothes are still under the sink from last time, too.â
Luke held up a thumb, then turned his head on the couch and looked at me. âYouâre the guy who knows the woman who applied to be a crime scene tech?â
I nodded once. âAce Valentine.â
I held out my hand, and Luke took it, shaking it once before dropping my hand.
âYou have her number?â
I blinked. âYeah. Sheâs mine.â
He grinned. âLet me take a shower. Can you call her over here and I can just interview her now?â
The surprise mustâve shown on my face because he grinned.
âIâve been looking for a new crime scene tech for months,â he said, reading my thoughts. âAs long as she doesnât have a record, and sheâs hard working, Iâm willing to interview her.â
I shrugged. âShe was a problem teen, but I donât think she actually has a record,â I felt it prudent to point out. I didnât want to call Codie all the way over here and get her hopes up if Luke didnât know what he was in for.
