“Well—” Shayna Brand looked around the barn after she flipped the switch to turn on the lights “—I think we’ve done our best here.”

“Agreed.” Savannah joined her sister-in-law in the center of the barn at Liam’s cabin. “What do you think, Hawk? Have we captured your vision?”

Hawk wasn’t certain that he’d had a “vision” before his soon-to-be sisters-in-law shared their vision for the space with him. He’d just wanted to put up some white lights to add ambience for the evening proposal he was planning for his beloved. While Jessie was spending some much-needed girl time with some of her closest childhood friends, he had been busy with Shayna and Savannah, turning the old barn into a romantic getaway perfect for presenting his fiancée with the custom ring he had designed with Tiffany.

“I think it’s better than I had in mind,” he said. “Thanks to you both.”

Shayna had her hands resting on her large belly; she was in her final trimester with her first child with her husband, Noah.

“Everything is better with Christmas lights,” Shayna said, following up with a joyful, tinkling laugh and a surprised look on her face. “My son just kicked me! I think he must be happy about the Christmas lights too.”

“The summer of Brand babies,” Savannah said, her hands naturally moving to her own growing baby bump.

“It seems to be a bit of an outbreak,” Hawk noted.

“Well,” Bruce’s wife said, “with seven brothers, all married, plus Jessie, it’s bound to happen. More the merrier, I think.”

“Agreed,” Shayna said before she gave Hawk and Savannah a goodbye hug.

“We’d better skedaddle and let you get ready for your big night,” Savannah said. “You just shoot me a text when Jessie is on her way home, and I’ll bring the food over.”

Savannah, one of the best cooks in the family, had offered to make one of Jessie’s favorite meals—homemade lasagna. According to his fiancée, Savannah’s lasagna was legendary and second to none.

“I will.” Hawk hugged both of them, and then he went back to setting up the barn.

He brought a small table and two chairs into the barn aisle. He had found the table and chairs in one of the storage sheds and then went back to the cabin to shower and shave. It was odd, but he was actually nervous. He’d already proposed, she had said yes and they had a baby on the way. It didn’t make sense that he should be nervous, and yet he was.

To keep himself occupied, he walked down to the barn to double check the setup. Pleased, he returned to the cabin and sat down in one of the rocking chairs. He was still rocking away, working on settling his nerves, when Jessie called.

“Hello, love,” he said, happy to hear her voice.

“Hello, yourself, handsome,” she said playfully. “Miss me yet?”

“Absolutely.”

“Should I come home early?”

Hawk’s stomach knotted; his plan was dependent on surprising Jessie at dusk when the lights would provide the best effect.

“I’m going to be out with Bruce until six.
