In a second email, titled ‘More Recollections’, Peter described another incident during the same wretched holiday. On this occasion, he ‘was in the car with Our Father and Nina and a girlfriend of hers’.

We went to a house where Nina knew the people, who had a child with some sort of disability. I don’t know if it was autism, Down syndrome or some other condition but the child was pretty disturbed, but was obviously well loved by the parents.

We had a cup of tea and some biscuits and then we said goodbye. Getting back into the car, Our Father says, ‘I never thought I was going to a freak show in a three-ring circus.’

Your mum and her friend were of course very upset by this statement and even I as a thirteen-year-old thought it was a pretty indelicate statement from a doctor.

They then had a huge row, shouting at each other whilst he drove. I don’t know what Nina’s friend thought of the good doctor that your mum had married.
