MONDAY

Zoë hadn’t received a single message, neither from Sven nor Kenneth. She didn’t honestly expect anything from Sven so early in the morning, but she would have at least expected something from Kenneth. She didn’t get it. Their discussion the other night wasn’t really a proper fight, plus he always had his phone with him. Something was up.

She got out of bed. If all was well, the search for Sven’s next victim had already begun. Liam, Linda, and Ann were coordinating the operation and had left hours ago. In the wardrobe in her hotel room, Zoë found a white plastic bag she could leave her laundry in to have it washed and ironed. In an attempt to get some peace of mind, she decided to use it, quickly tidying up her bedroom and changing her clothes. Then, accompanied by Tamzin, she headed downstairs, where Seamus sat reading a newspaper.

“I’ll take you two to the station, then Leo and I are going to hide the stuff in Lewes,” he told her. Lewes was close to Monk’s House, where Virginia Woolf had once lived and where the team had decided to hide their box of items for Sven. She got breakfast and coffee for herself and Tamzin, and Leo emerged fifteen minutes later.

“Day six,” he said, looking at Zoë.

“Day six,” she replied.

She didn’t feel like saying any more about it. It was what it was.

Seamus dropped her off at the police station and set off with Leo toward Lewes. At the station it was relatively quiet. Liam, Linda, and Ann were sitting somewhere in a mobile command center coordinating the search. All preparation for the operation had largely passed Zoë by. She greeted the officers who were there and then retreated to the think tank. A lot would be happening today. The search, their crossword, officers visiting empty holiday homes near Haslemere, and Sven would be making himself heard. What would it be today? In her head, Zoë ran through all the clues: first the list of rules, then the music box with the song “Breathing,” and shortly after that the advert containing lyrics from the song “Dance Little Sister.” The latest clue referred to the victim, but they had no idea what “Breathing” was in reference to, except that it was performed by Zoë’s favorite artist. Until now, Sven hadn’t sent any clues about the locations except for expressing his love of three and triangles in the rules of the game and his notes. He’d placed the box at the point that formed a perfect triangle with the locations where the first victim had been abducted from and found and the site where he’d kidnapped victim two. What if he was going to form another triangle with this point as a starting point?

Zoë grabbed a ruler and drew a new triangle with the exact same dimensions as the first, but with the location where victim two had been abducted as the point at the bottom right. She looked at the result.
