CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Camilla raced into the Big House’s kitchen at Ms. Patti’s shout. She’d been sitting in the cozy, overstuffed chair in the living room, with her feet on an ottoman, her laptop on her lap, staring at the blank screen. The story she’d been working on before Heath dragged her to Texas was flat and uninteresting. If she was honest, it was boring. The words wouldn’t flow, because she couldn’t concentrate on anything except Heath. Ms. Patti’s call was a more than welcome reprieve.

“I’m here.”

“Good. I need your help.” Ms. Patti had stacks of things piled onto the kitchen table. Loaves of bread, packages of cold cuts, lettuce and tomatoes, and several bags of chips and pretzels. “Would you mind fixing as many sandwiches as you can with what’s there?”

“I can handle that.” Reaching for the bread, she pulled all the slices free and stacked them into two piles, and began assembling the ham, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes, and wrapped each one individually with cling wrap. Ms. Patti moved swiftly from cabinet to pantry, pulling out packages of cookies and other snacks.

“Are you planning on feeding an army? This seems like an awful lot of food.”

Ms. Patti paused in the middle of the floor and drew in a deep breath. “Sorry, I should have explained, but I wanted to get things moving. There’s a situation in town at the high school. All of the county’s first responders have been called in. I’ve been rallying the troops. We’ll make sure there’s plenty of food, coffee, water. Whatever they need.”

“Sounds pretty serious. Is there anything more I can do than make sandwiches? I’ve taken a couple of first aid courses, and I’m certified in CPR.”

Ms. Patti unloaded the stack of food in her arms, and patted Camilla’s shoulder. “Hopefully it won’t come to that. Sally Anne at the sheriff’s office called, said there’s a hostage situation at the high school. A couple of men barricaded themselves in one of the classrooms.”

Camilla dropped the piece of bread she’d picked up. “Oh, no! That’s horrible.”

“The rest of the school’s been evacuated. We’re heading into town and setting up a couple of relief stations. Gracie’s bringing in tons of coffee from her shop. Jill’s bringing everything she’s got already baked in the store and closing down for the day. Daisy’s got the diner fixing soup and anything else she can, so people have a hot meal. The church ladies are gathering blankets, quilts, anything else they think might be needed.”

Camilla began assembling more sandwiches, though her mind immediately went to Heath, praying he was safe. She knew he’d be at the high school, right in the thick of things, because that’s the kind of man he was, putting others before himself.

“Sounds like you’ve got everything covered.”

“When Rafe first took office, there was a complete revamping of the emergency response guidelines, making sure we have protocols in place for every contingency. Rafe had Sally Anne activate it as soon as the hostage situation started.”

“I don’t know, it seems surreal.
