Chapter Seventeen

“I think I want to go much shorter.”

Miranda sat in Gabby’s salon chair, hair shampooed and conditioned. Gabby ran her hands through Miranda’s long black hair that went almost to her waist. Fun bossa nova music played at the perfect volume through the ceiling speakers and mixed with the sound of a client getting her hair washed by Gabby’s employee Ivy and a few people chatting at the front reception desk. A few neighborhood ladies sat on the soft orange sofa.

“Really? Are we talking a bob, pixie short?” Gabby held Miranda’s hair up, leaving a swath across her forehead to mimic bangs. Miranda would look fabulous with short hair. All the angles of her face would pop. It would highlight her eyes and full lips. Poor Cruz might not be able to pick his jaw up off the floor.

Her salon door was propped open, and the breeze sent a wave of fresh air flitting through the space. It twirled with the eucalyptus shampoo, the sharp scent of nail polish and the fresh hyacinths in the bud vases, not to mention the enormous bouquets of flowers people had sent to congratulate her. The bright pink jagged-edged and gorgeous peonies from her moms, the lilacs from the Brockman ladies and the stunning purple calla lilies from Luca. Well, she wasn’t sure she could smell those from where she stood, but her heart fluttered every time she eyed them, towering high and proud on the table in the waiting area.

Gabby was on cloud nine. Actually, she floated above it. The salon had opened with only minor hitches. Maybe because she’d planned and planned and worked her ass off to get here, right here to this moment. Plus, she’d had so much help. She couldn’t deny that, and she silently reprimanded herself for insisting she do it all on her own, because she was nothing without these wonderful people in her life who were willing to do anything for her. She’d definitely lost her way in Los Angeles when she’d pushed her support system away.

They’d started with a soft opening today with a few clients, booked in advance. But it was such a good idea Gabby felt, as the day had moved on, to make sure equipment worked in the moment, to use the new computer system, to learn how to handle walk-ins, and break times. If they were going to be this busy, she might need to hire more people quickly. Especially a receptionist to handle the front desk, because not only were people constantly walking in to say hi and make appointments, but the phone was ringing off the hook. Three hours into their first day and she was almost afraid to see how many appointments they’d booked into the future.

Thank goodness for family. Her dad, an introvert and possibly the quietest man on the planet who studied the effects of climate change on local animal species, had a secret talent of being able to field phone calls and remain calm. And he was having a blast taking appointments and bragging about the services at Salon Flores.
