TWENTY-FOUR

Caspian

We waited outside the room for what felt like an age.

“A princess bond has to be given by a mate.” Bane’s eyes fixed on Kai, who leaned against the wall, tense as a cat. He said nothing.

I didn’t reply. I couldn’t. We all knew what that meant. Kai was a seer, and he could confirm Logan had given that bite.

Yet, I clung to that silence. It was the one final string of denial to keep me from breaking like I knew I would the second we went back into that room.

“Angel’s almost gone.” Kai said after too much time. His gaze darted between us, and he might look expressionless if you didn’t know him. I could see he was one small fracture away from disconnecting completely.

I swallowed my own pride as I tried to dig up ways to get through to him. Angel’s aura had almost completely vanished from the pack. Right now, he was the faintest flicker in my mind; he’d closed the connection down, not wanting any of us to feel what he was feeling. And I didn’t blame him.

I walked over to Kai, not capable of offering words. Instead, I squeezed his shoulder until he looked up at me. He responded to touch better than anything else, besides.

Self-loathing didn’t absolve me from my job as his big brother, and it never mattered how old we got.

It didn’t matter that I’d met Kai for the first time when he was seven and I was eight. Or that all I’d been able to offer was my shithole of a home. The home I ran while my mother worked hard to wipe out every last brain cell with as many drugs and drinks as welfare checks afforded her.

Kai turned to me and I tugged him into my arms before he could protest. The only thing that gave him away was how tightly he held on.

“He’s not going anywhere,” I murmured. Angel had said once he would give up his aura rather than let the pack suffer. The foul, twisted part of me clung to that. It was easier to watch someone lose something they had faced up to and made peace with. It was a different story when they didn’t want to lose what was taken.

“Cass… I’m s-scared.”

“I know. I know. But I got you.”

“Swear t-to me.”

“I swear it. Course I swear it.”

Bile rose in my throat at the memory, and I buried it fast. It was a testament to how off balance I was today if shit like that broke through.

The latch of the door clicked, and Kai tugged away to look over at Havoc, who was peering out. She looked sick, her olive skin was drained of all colour. She’d put on a pair of leggings—thank fuck. I didn’t think I could handle my rampant fucking alpha hindbrain getting away from me tonight. The image of Havoc in an oversized hoodie, sleeves to her knuckles and bare legs tucked beneath her as she clutched Bane. It was haunting. She’d looked so scared.
