WHEN CAITLYN’S hands steadied enough for her to actually use them, the first thing she did was call Denise. “Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” she gasped the second Denise picked up.

“Cat, is something wrong?” Denise asked, sounding worried. “I’m already on my way over, but I’ll break a few traffic laws to get there faster if you need me for something else.”

“I got a response,” Caitlyn hissed into the phone. “I haven’t opened the letter yet, but I got a response!”

“I’m sure you were accepted,” Denise replied, immediately knowing what Caitlyn was talking about.

Caitlyn laughed, the noise completely hysterical. “I can’t open the envelope. I can’t do it.”

“I’ll be over in five minutes and we’ll open it together,” Denise told her. “Just breathe, Cat. It’ll be okay.”

“All right. See you in five.” Caitlyn hung up the phone, staring down at the envelope and, in particular, the return address of her top college, as if it would lunge up and bite her.

Denise found her in that same position when she arrived five minutes later. “Do you want me to open it?” she asked quietly.

Caitlyn shook her head, picking up the envelope. “I’ll do it,” she replied, her trembling fingers opening the back of the envelope.

Denise put a hand on her knee as she pulled out the letter inside. “You have to look at it to read it,” Denise teased gently as Caitlyn squeezed her eyes shut.

“I can’t look,” Caitlyn whispered. Denise put a hand under her chin and directed her head so they were facing each other. Slowly, Caitlyn opened her eyes to see Denise’s comforting smile.

“Hey, if you don’t get in, it’s not the end of the world. It’ll be okay. Just look.”

Caitlyn took a deep breath as she looked down at the letter. Automatically, her eyes immediately focused on the first word.

Congratulations.

“I got in,” she whispered as she began to read the letter. “I got in!” Letting out a little shriek, Caitlyn threw her arms around Denise’s neck. “I got in, Denise!”

“I heard you,” Denise replied, laughing as she hugged Caitlyn back.

“I couldn’t have done it without your help,” Caitlyn told Denise, squeezing her tightly. “I would never have written my essay as well as I did if you didn’t help me edit it.” Unable to stop herself, Caitlyn pressed a kiss to Denise’s cheek. It might have been her imagination, but Caitlyn thought Denise stiffened slightly.

“You okay?” she asked, pulling back.

Denise smiled widely at her. “I’m fine,” she dismissed. “And hey, why are we talking about me? You got into your top school, early decision. Today is your day.” Denise took Caitlyn’s hands and squeezed them. “Congrats, Cat.”

Caitlyn beamed.
