At the summit of his mountain, I let Lennox clip me onto a snowboard. He showed me how to start, stop, and how to fall. Viola bounced on her board alongside, cheering me on before losing interest in my pathetic attempts and tiny successes, then it was just me and him.
Without the use of my feet, and with my hands having no purpose apart from flailing, I was wildly out of control. In a car, the machinery around me became an extension of my body. I could sense and adapt direction and speed. On snow, strapped to a board, I was at the mercy of other forces.
I never did this. Since I’d ditched school, I’d stopped letting myself be vulnerable.
But when Lennox praised me, or applauded my failures and called them practice, I wanted more. I wanted to make the big man happy and have more of his smiles aimed at me.
So I allowed it, his management of me.
We played on the mountain, until the sun neared the horizon, darker skies looming in the west.
As soon as I could make it happen, I had us both take a tumble in the crisp snow. Lennox rolled me on top of him, protecting me, and I wriggled up him and landed a kiss on his mouth. He gave a small huff of surprise but instantly moved his cold lips on mine.
Too many layers of clothes divided us. We had on helmets and sunglasses that clacked together, but this kiss was the only way I had of describing the new feelings inside me.
Lennox seemed to know. He rolled us again and reared over me. “You’re enjoying yourself, aye?”
I raised a shoulder, dislodging snow. “Every time I fall, you pick me up. It definitely could be worse.”
“I like picking you up.”
“Huh, then I’ll fall more often.”
My guy pulled me up so I was on my knees, then removed his sunglasses. I did the same with mine.
“Wait until I get ye home, sweetheart. When I strip this gear off ye and take ye to my bed. See then how happy ye make me.”
The exhaustion from the snowboarding lifted, and my body zinged alive. “Can we go now?”
“Race ye to the bottom.”
