“I think I fucked up,” I told James, sitting across from him inside his office the next afternoon.

He leaned back, blowing out a long, drawn-out breath because I wasn’t the first person to utter those words to him. “What happened?”

“Nya.”

He pulled his hand down his face, letting out a strangled groan. “What about her?”

“So.” I hunched over with my elbows resting on my knees and stared at the floor. “We may have slept with her.” I closed my eyes and grimaced, waiting for James to jump over the desk and knock me on my ass.

The wheels on his chair squeaked against the plastic carpet protector. “We?”

“Yeah.” I lifted my head just enough to see he was still seated, which was a good sign. So far, James and I didn’t have to come to blows over something I did inside my bedroom.

James and I had an understanding about sex. As members of the same club, often seeing each other and the other’s woman in very little clothing, we never talked about sex at work. What happened at the club, stayed at the club. We were different people there. The two lives never crossed, and so far, we’d been good at maintaining the separation.

“The three of us,” I said and finally brought my eyes to his. I wasn’t scared of James. Not of his power, at least, but he was my boss, and I didn’t want to put the business in jeopardy.

“Oh,” he said, sounding more shocked than pissed.

“I’m sorry.” My facial expression wasn’t a frown, but I wasn’t smiling either. I didn’t know what the fuck to say or how to look because I’d never done something as stupid as that in my entire life. Business and pleasure never mixed in my line of work, but then, I’d never rescued someone either.

“Did she want it?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Interesting.” His eyebrows shot up as his head jerked back. “She’s full of surprises.”

“That’s one way of putting it.”

He laced his fingers together before resting them on the desk. “What happens in your house is your business. The doctor gave her the all clear. We are no longer employed by the Halsteads, and Nya isn’t our client either. She is willingly staying with you, and you didn’t force yourself on her, right?”

“That’s a laughable statement. You know me better than that.”

“I know, man. Like we’ve said before, some shit isn’t meant for the office, and it’s no one’s business but your own.”

I nodded in assent because that had always been our agreement, but I felt this situation was different from any other we’d been put in before.

Before James could respond, there was a light knock on the door. Angel walked in, face ashen and without a smile. “Ret,” she said softly as I turned.

My stomach dropped as soon as my eyes met hers. “What happened?”

Angel was always our ray of sunshine. The single bright light in the office every day. No matter how crazy shit got, she always kept her cool, sprinkling her happiness everywhere she could.
