Chapter Eight

For Nick the world ceased to exist, except for the taste and feel of Grace. His hands slid along the curve of her torso and down the swell of her hips and he realized how perfectly sized she was. Her head reached his shoulder. Her body fit against his as if it were made to be there. And his hands fit her shape. But it was the alluring taste of her mouth that drew him. Soft and wet, it enticed him to come farther, taste more, give more, take more.

He felt himself being pulled under, swept away, and totally lost until a spark of sanity ignited in the back of his brain. First, he remembered that she’d probably come to Turner to divorce him. Then he remembered that was more than likely because there was another man. Then he remembered that once she got her memory back, she’d hate him.

She’d hate him. The mere thought hurt now. Before, when Grace was an abstract recollection from his past, he could deal with her hating him. He could even understand her hating him. But now that he knew her again, now that he’d spent time with her, tasted her, touched her, the thought that she would hate him pierced his heart.

Holding back a sigh of regret, and feeling an ache of misery so intense it felt more physical than emotional, Nick reached behind him for her hands, which she had fastened at his nape.

“Let’s get back to the house.”

“Why? Let’s stand out here and kiss.”

As she said the last, she nuzzled his neck and Nick gritted his teeth against the pain of wanting her. “Grace, you were very recently hurt. Today, you feel pretty good...”

Pretty good? God, she’d felt wonderful. She felt like every good thing he could want in life. She felt like heaven.

He cleared his threat “Today, you’re feeling well, and you want to try things that probably aren’t in your best interest.”

“Since when is kissing one’s husband not in a woman’s best interest?” She nipped his neck again. “I remember you telling me that you and I could lie on a blanket for hours and neck.” As she said this, she pulled back to peer at him. “Well, it never struck me until this moment, but I can really understand that.” She eased to her tiptoes, slid her arms around his neck and grazed his mouth with a soft, fleeting brush of her lips. “Anybody ever tell you you’re a wonderful kisser?”

Nick cleared his throat. “Only you.”

“That’s because I have good taste.”

Nick pulled her hands from behind his neck again. “And you also need to get into the house.”

“Why?”

“Why? Grace, you’re killing me.” Not knowing how else to get himself out of this, Nick added, “If you don’t stop, I’ll be so aroused I’ll be in pain for the next three days.”

She grinned wickedly. “I know a way to ease that pain.”

Squeezing his eyes shut, Nick said, “Grace, you’re sick. You were just in an accident, you’re not ready for any of this yet.
