Chapter Ten

“We’ll need you in five minutes, Ms. Soloman.” The woman gave a quick nod as she pulled Gwen’s dressing room door shut.

“This is bullshit.”

Simon’s anger practically blasted at her.

“Your car exploded here on set yesterday. And now you’re back tonight?”

Back and pretty exhausted. She’d spent the day at Wilde Securities, answering question after question and trying to act as if she was completely in control and not seriously freaking out because her life was being ripped apart. She’d even gone down to the police station so the cops could have their turn questioning her about the car bombing.

She knew that Simon had grilled her agent. And her assistant. She was pretty sure Wilde Securities had even interrogated most of the crew members on set. Simon and Eric viewed everyone as suspects, and Gwen was starting to stare around herself with the same suspicion. Who can I trust?

She wanted to run and hide, but that wasn’t exactly an option. Not when there was work to do. Not when the cast and crew were counting on her. It was time to get to work, and no one would stop her from doing her job. “I’m primary in this scene. If I didn’t show up, then I’d delay production for everyone. All of those people are out there to do a job, and I won’t be the reason this project is delayed.”

“A car bomb.”

She stared at her reflection. Her makeup had been carefully applied by a team of two women and a man—the same team that had made her hair fall in loose curls over her shoulders. Perfect curls that she could never, not in a million years, recreate without them. “Wilde Securities is checking all the vehicles, right? And the studio said they doubled the security. No one will be on set without express permission from the folks in charge here.”

He growled. A sound that shouldn’t have been sexy, but it was. Everything about the guy was sexy to her.

“I don’t like this, Gwen.”

Now she turned to stare at him. He was glaring. Looking all fierce and kick-ass and sexy. Lickably sexy. She’d always had a weakness for tall, dark, and handsome guys—a weakness she fully blamed on him. “I don’t like it, either,” Gwen told him bluntly. “But I can’t run away from this.” That was one of the reasons she’d gone to Wilde Securities in the first place. To fight, not to give in to the blackmailer. “People count on me. If I back out, that’s work that doesn’t get done. Salaries that might not get paid. I’ll do what I’m scheduled to do, then we’ll leave.” She rose, the robe she wore sliding over her thighs. “Besides, I have you.”

His eyes narrowed on her. “Yes, you have me.”

Gwen faltered. No, I don’t. I haven’t had you, not really, in years. But a woman could pretend. She was very good at pretending. “You’ll keep me safe.” She believed that. “You’ll see the threats coming.”

“I didn’t see the threat last night.
