GRIFFIN

While Cora showers, I call Zero. The operation is a go for tomorrow night, and he’ll be here. We’ve got tonight to relax.

She steps from the steamy bathroom in a fluffy white bathrobe, her hair wrapped in a towel. Fresh-faced and cheeks glowing a rosy-red, she beams at me. “That was freaking fantastic. The shower head…” She straightens the wrap on her head. “To die for.”

“Glad you liked it.”

“It’s your turn. Go.”

“I will but before that I figured we could order food, or we could go out.”

“No, staying in is perfect. I want to enjoy every bit of this freaking gorgeous room.” She skips toward the bed.

It’s hard not to succumb to her excitement about the room; it’s contagious. Call it a hunch, but I’m almost certain Cora’s never stayed at a hotel, let alone one this luxurious.

“I’m looking forward to the bed.” She eyes both mattresses like they’re diamonds, sparkling and coveted. “And I’m willing to bet there’s a slew of movies we could watch. We can watch a movie, can’t we?”

“Yes.” I smile, and it comes easier than ever before. “Eating in it is. Do you like Vietnamese?”

She stops midstride, shrugging awkwardly. “I don’t know. Never had it.”

“Are you up for trying it?” I walk over to the desk and pick up the phone. “The hotel boasts an amazing Vietnamese restaurant. We could order from there.”

“Sure.” She plops onto a chair, curling her legs under her.

“Anything you don’t like?”

“Um, I don’t… I won’t know until I try it. Get whatever you’d have.”

Once food’s ordered, I shower and change into sweatpants and a T-shirt, the last of my clean clothes. Fortunately, the hotel has a laundry service and I’ll have fresh clothes by the morning.

We eat like royalty, and once we’ve cleaned up and cleared away the takeout containers, Cora falls onto the bed with a groan. “Ugh, I’m so full. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much before.”

“Yeah, me too, but it was good.” I pat my stomach and gesture to the space beside her. “Do you mind?”

“Sure.” She pushes to sitting and crosses her legs. “Who knew rice cakes could taste so good? The only ones I’ve ever had were like paper.” She makes a disgusted face, eyes squinting, lips twisting, and nose scrunched.

Again, I chuckle. I haven’t ever smiled or laughed as much as I do with Cora. I rest my back against the headboard and reach for the TV remote. “You up for a movie?”

“Yes.” She fluffs a pillow and slides it behind her back.

Her knee lightly brushes my thigh, and my lips twitch, unable to hold back the corners from climbing once again. I like touching her, being near her.

Needing a distraction, I flick through the movies, and she stares at me, looking as if she’s lost in deep thought. Life-altering ones. Trepidation swirls in my gut.

“Griffin, I wanted to ask…” Her fingers glide along my forearm over the ridge of a small scar hidden by the ink but still somewhat visible if you know to look for it.
