Stavros watched her pluck a towel from a sun-lounger. Her movements were jerky, abrupt, as if she was nervous.
He speared a hand through his hair in frustration. Never had a situation spun so far out of his control. Never had he lost command of his own emotions! He was livid, but whether at himself or his unwanted wife, he wasnât sure.
Shock had blasted him as he read the investigatorsâ report. It confirmed Tessa Marlowe hadnât been safe with her family these last years, or decadently profiting from her looks at the expense of some man. Instead sheâd been scraping a precarious living in a third-world country racked by poverty and civil war.
Because he, Stavros Denakis, had failed her.
It was a powerful punch to the gut, knowing heâd been safe when she wasnât. No matter that heâd crossed the border by the skin of his teeth, with severe concussion and a fractured collar-bone. Nor that everyone had believed her dead.
His stomach roiled. Even the knowledge that she was on the make, angling for an undeserved share of his fortune, didnât lessen his discomfort.
No wonder she was so desperate for cash after the privation sheâd endured. Sto Diavolo! That also explained her fragility. She looked as though a gust of wind would knock her down.
Yet that didnât impede the rush of raw lust he experienced whenever he saw her. Nor did the fact that he was honour-bound to another woman. It was irrelevant that there was no emotional bond between him and Angela. Heâd given her his promise.
As heâd promised to protect a defenceless stranger with eyes like gem-fire four years ago.
Stavros swallowed down the bitter knot that rose in his throat. He shouldnât feel this blood-hot craving for another woman. It made a mockery of his plans, his self-control, his very honour.
Seeing Tessa Marlowe in those ragged shorts and ill-fitting top should have emphasised how little they had in common. How distant she was from his ideal female: voluptuous, perfectly groomed and easy on the ego.
Yet the sight of her, in wet clothes that clung like a second skin, dried his mouth and froze his body. The too-tight top emphasised the surprisingly lush curves of her breasts. Her streamlined body shouted a feminine allure he was powerless to resist. Even the thick rope of dark hair, sliding over her back as she dried herself, mesmerised him.
He itched to reach for her, shape her delicate curves, caress those high, pouting breasts that would be a perfect fit for his hands, mould her tiny waist to his touch.
After just a few days of decent food there was a change in her. A rounding-out of that sleek body and a new spark of vitality. Both served only to highlight her allure. And his guilty attraction.
Stavros clenched his hands. Only this morning Angela had left for northern Greece and family commitments. Heâd stayed behind to untangle this marriage. Yet here he was, rooted to the spot, mind atrophied by the rhythmic swipe of lush towelling over Tessa Marloweâs bare legs.
