Chapter 13

Greed/ Micah

GREED

Myron looked displeased by Jaime’s outburst.

“Insignificant bugs shouldn’t speak. Let the adults do the talking, especially if you want to see your friend returned,” Myron informed Jaime.

“Where’s Derrick?” I asked the self-styled fox leader.

“If you must know, he’s safe. Gagged and bound in Darnell’s old bedroom,” Myron said.

“What did you do to Darnell?” I asked. “We only allowed your group inside Moon Burrow, because Venom deemed Darnell trustworthy.”

“Darnell? Oh, his body is probably still rotting in the local park,” Myron said in a dismissive tone.

He sounded unconcerned, but I could tell by his stiff body language that my comment about Darnell made him angry.

Jaime let out a cry of alarm at that revelation. I had no reason to doubt Myron was lying.

Since Jaime mentioned his brother was missing for weeks, I already suspected Myron had a hand in his disappearance, or in this case, his murder.

I risked a glance at Jaime to see how he was holding up. Having an unstable shifter around was dangerous. If Jaime tried something reckless, he might ruin the proceedings.

Micah gave Jaime a comforting hug. Then I noticed Myron following my stare. I immediately wanted to wipe the condescending smirk on his face.

“Good, you’ve brought the raven healer along,” Myron said. “I wasn’t certain if it was truly him my boss wanted when I flirted with him at the bar. Now I’m certain.”

“What exactly do you mean by that?” I asked in an icy voice.

Alarm bells rang in my head. My inner grizzly woke from its slumber and I knew my eyes had turned bright cold.

Crash clasped my shoulder in warning, but I ignored him. Myron had my full attention now.

“A fair trade. Derrick for your healer,” Myron said.

Red rage tinted my vision at those words. I took a threatening step towards him.

Myron didn’t seem to notice, because he clapped his hands, looking delighted for some reason.

“Oh, Sweeney would be so pleased with me. He wants that healer real bad, you see. Although I can’t see the appeal,” Myron exclaimed.

Did this slick bastard really think he had the upper hand, that I’d willingly surrender Micah to his and Sweeney’s tender mercies?

Myron probably thought himself a genius. It was time to teach him a lesson, one he would never forget.

I finally closed the distance between us. In seconds, claws replaced my human fingers. I came at Myron like a savage animal, easily tackling him to the carpeted floor.

The fox alpha barely registered the attack, because he didn’t even put up any resistance.

I shoved my left clawed hand into his neck, piercing his jugular. Blood spurted out. Shocked silence filled the room. Then chaos erupted.

Snarls and growls emerged. Crash and Lenny reacted faster than the fox shifters.

The two fox shifters by the window went for my head, clearly enraged by the death of their leader. My friends each took one fox shifter, leaving me to deal with two more.

“Get down,” I overheard Micah telling Jaime. “We need to take cover.”

Micah would know what to do, I realized.
