Gracie

“Hello.”

“Gracie.”

“Cub.”

“That was awkward as hell.” His deep chuckle fills the line.

“Slightly.”

“I was wondering if you’d like to go to a small party with me.”

“Details,” I say.

“Izzy and Juliette are welcome. Just a few friends, good food, and fun.”

“Pinochle?” I ask.

“No, I think Hart is still pissed.”

“Is he going?” I ask.

“No, he doesn’t have anyone to cover for him.”

“After dance or what?”

“Jesus, are you playing twenty questions here or what?”

“I need details, Cub.”

“This Saturday. Kid friendly. Food, friends, and fun.”

“Does this include a sleepover?” I ask just to bait him.

“Do you want a sleepover?” He asks.

“Only if I get a better pillow this time.”

“Gracie.”

“Cub.”

“I’m on call right now, racing to a major drug bust, this question only requires a simple yes or no.”

“I…uh.” I stall on purpose blushing. “Sure.”

“Dammit, Gracie.”

I laugh hearing him all flustered. “Want to come over for dinner tonight?”

“Yes.” He pauses with a confusing ruckus in the background. “See how easy that answer was?”

“Bye, Prez Dickhead.”

“Later, Asshole.”

I bustle around the house picking it up before I start dinner. I shocked my own self when I asked him over. It scared the shit out of me when I slept on his thigh the other night. The fact is I’m still alive, feel guilty as shit, but in the same moment feel amazing. I fucking hate even thinking about any of it because it all comes back to me feeling guilty.

The guilt turns into anxiety then the anxiety boils up into stress and it all spirals out of control when I analyze it too much. Then I see Juliette’s sweet face and it’s just a reminder why I moved back here. Cub and Izzy have just become the perfect distraction. He makes me feel like I haven’t in years.

Feeling reminds me what life can bring. Feeling makes me sad, but Cub’s patience has brought on a new meaning.

Juliette helps me whip up a green salad and then mashes the potatoes. She sprinkles the steak with seasonings before running off to set up her ninja turtles. All the food is prepped but the steaks. When the doorbell rings Juliette is out of her room and sprinting to the door.

She has Izzy wrapped up in a hug and dragging her into the living room. Cub remains in the doorway. He looks more exhausted than the day at the first dance lessons. There are visible black lines under his puffy eyes. He’s typically like a modern day Hulk in his uniform, but today he’s deflated.

“You okay, dickhead?” I ask with a smirk.

“Better now.” He tries to pull off a smile, but it’s fake as shit.

“Liar.”

“Yeah, I’m beat, but this hot chick invited me over for dinner.”

“Jesus.” I grab his upper arm and pull him into my house. “Don’t be cheesy.”

“Being honest, asshole.”

I cup his face in my hands. “Are you okay, Cub?”

“I’m fucking tired, but like I said, this hot chick invited me over.”

“Oh shut the hell up.”

“Fine.” He leans down and presses his lips to mine.

I freeze at first shocked by the action.
