21: Charlotte’s Cobweb

“Thank you for a delicious dinner, Hazel,” Jude said a while later.

“Oh, you’re welcome, dear.” She leaned forward and gave his hand a squeeze. “And thank you for your eye-opening insight on Loretta’s character.”

I fought back a snicker. All evening, the two of them paused the show periodically to discuss scenes and dialogue and even acting chops. I had to admit, it was kind of cute.

“Do you need any help cleaning up?” Jude leaned forward, eyes steady on Hazel. He was good at that—making you feel like you were the only one in the room. And Hazel definitely noticed.

“Oh, no,” she said, a soft flush filling her cheeks. “I can take care of it.”

“You sure? I don’t mind.”

Casting a quick glance my way, Hazel reconsidered. “Actually...you’re quite tall. Can I ask you for a favor?”

He grinned—the knock-a-girl’s-shoes-off kind of grin—and said, “Anything for you.”

A girlish giggle escaped Hazel’s lips. Sitting back in her chair, she pointed toward the dining room. “There’s a pesky cobweb in the corner I haven’t been able to get to. Do you mind?”

I snorted, then covered my mouth with my hand. Really, Hazel?

“You got it.” Jude stood and I lounged in his place, watching as Hazel directed him to the dust rag and cleaner.

“You’re shameless,” I said to her as she settled back into her seat.

“There’s a very important lesson to be learned here, Kitten.” I peeked out of one eye and she finished. “I’m not as limber as I used to be, but I can still take advantage of a man like that.”

“Hazel!”

“What?” She laughed. “One of us ought to.”

“Uh, Cat?” Jude called from the next room before I could further chastise my grandmother. “Can you come here for a second?”

Pushing myself off the couch, I ignored Hazel’s wink and headed into the dining room. “What’s up?”

Jude stood in the middle of the room, dust rag in one hand, spray can in the other, horror on his face. “I don’t mean to alarm you,” he started. “But that cobweb is...uh...inhabited.”

“Okay.” I glanced toward the far corner, where he’d managed to clear away most of the dusty web mess. “Enlighten me.”

“Spider.” His eyes doubled in size. “Huge, disgusting spider.”

“Oh.” Squinting, I moved closer. Sure enough, a hairy black thing crept lower on the wall. “Yuck.”

Without another word, I headed into the kitchen.

“Wh-where are you going?” Jude called behind me.

“You and Charlotte look like you could use some alone time,” I said as I took another couple steps backward.

“Wait, what?” he asked, his voice hitching up a notch. “Uh...Charlotte really isn’t my type.”

“Just keep your eye on her for two seconds,” I called back. Once in the kitchen, I searched the cupboard. With a triumphant fist pump, I headed back into the dining room to find Jude still stuck to the floor.

“I got this,” I said to him, tiptoeing over to the spider, which hadn’t moved an inch. I put the plastic dish I’d scrounged up close to it and waited as it crawled in. Then, I covered the dish with its lid and went back into the kitchen.
