There. Let’s see what she thinks of that.

I love the expression on her face––a beautiful mix of anger and bewilderment––but my amusement is short-lived because this girl has a quick, sharp tongue that slices deep.

“Why are you wasting your time with me when we both know you’re going to be on Miss Black Halter Top’s list of potential suspects for her next pregnancy scare? Is collecting your debt really that important to you?”

Miss Black Halter Top?

Oh! She’s talking about Gabbi—my brother’s girlfriend. I open my mouth to explain but I’m interrupted when Jesse and his girl return from the dance floor.

He sits and assesses the situation. “What’s going on here?” he asks.

“Absolutely nothing.” Payton looks my way and takes another big suck of her drink. I notice it’s more than half finished. She’s definitely on a mission to forget something or somebody, and I want to know which it is.

Jesse leans over to say something to his girl, so I take the opportunity to straighten Payton out about Gabbi. “I disagree. Something is going on here and I don’t mean between me and my brother’s girlfriend, the girl in the black halter top.”

I wait for a reply but we’re interrupted again when Dane Wickham sits at our table. “Hey, Hawke, I didn’t get a chance to talk to you after the race. Nice job blowing the doors off my Porsche. Congratulations.”

I don’t recall ever being congratulated by an opponent. “Thanks, Wickham, but you had me for a minute at the start.”

Dane and I talk racing for a minute and then I turn back to Payton, although my attention never really left her. She won’t even look at me.

“Dane, I feel like dancing.” Payton reaches for his hand and stands, bringing her drink to her glossy lips.

“Break Your Heart” by Taio Cruz and Ludacris roars through the speakers and I’m glad it’s a dance mix. I don’t want Dane holding Payton during a slow song since she’s well on her way to being smashed.

I watch them go, and Jesse chooses now to give me a warning. “Don’t look at her like that. She’s not your kind of girl.”

What’s up with him? He can’t be the Jesse Boone I know. “Not my kind of girl, Boone? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Payton doesn’t do one-night stands like the chicks you’re accustomed to. She’s a different caliber.”

This isn’t news to me. “Who says I’m looking for a one-night stand?”

Jesse cackles. “We’ve been friends for a long time. I know you. You’re always looking for a piece but she’s not it.”

I’m not sure what to make of the way he’s acting about his girl’s friend. “Why are you so protective of her?”

“Payton’s been Claire’s best friend forever. Now she’s one of my best friends so I protect her from guys like you. She’s nursing a wound and doesn’t need you to add fuel to the fire.”

“You don’t have to convince me she’s different.” I knew she was from the second she strutted toward me in the middle of the road after she plowed into my car.
