SHE WAS GOING TO GET THEM all arrested.
Ian stood up to act as a human barrier between Marie and one of the two U.S. Treasury agents, John Roberts. âWhoa, whoa, whoa. I think we all could use a bit of a time-out here.â
Marieâs blue eyes flashed. And damn if, despite their present circumstances, Ian thought she was the most beautiful woman heâd ever laid eyes on.
She focused her attention on Ian. âI think Mr. Roberts and his buddy here need to have their heads examined.â
Essentially the worst that Ian had predicted might happen was happening.
Marie had accompanied him and Frankie Sr. into the meeting room at Treasury headquarters, and every word either of the agents said from there on out Marie had taken very personally. Mainly because they did know about the car sitting at the local dump and the reason why the junkyard manager hadnât known anything about any treasury agents was that the agents had gotten to the car before it had been towed there.
So what it boiled down to was that Frankie Bertelli Sr. wasnât only being investigated for money launderingâ¦but it was a pretty safe bet that murder was also somewhere on the list. Might even be number one. Establish motive first by getting Frankie to admit he was upset with his bookkeeper. Have him spill his frustration with him and possibly even get him to admit that, yes, at some point in their thirty-five-year working relationship he may have uttered words along the lines of ââdo that and Iâll kill,ââ no matter the context. And before you knew it, Frankie Sr. would have a new piece of jewelry in the form of handcuffs.
He glanced toward the two-way mirror. He didnât have to wonder if they were being videotaped. He knew it. And he had no doubt that someone in the district attorneyâs office, if not the D.A. himself, was either behind that glass or would be the recipient of the videotape should Frank give the agents what they wanted.
And given Marieâs emotional state, she might just unwittingly hand them that.
He sighed and dry-washed his face with his hands. âLook, whatâs say we all take five, okay? I donât know about you, but I could use a cold beverage right about now.â He looked at Roberts, filled with the desire to punch the guy right in the mouth himself, but maintaining a professional distance that allowed him to recognize that wasnât such a good idea. âDo you know where I can find one?â
The agent pointed toward the door. âHang a left. Thereâs a machine at the end of the hall.â
âOkay, weâll take five,â the other agent said, opening a door at the opposite end of the room that presumably led to their offices. âCome on,â he said to Roberts.
And just like that Ian, Marie and Frankie Sr. were alone.
Ian looked at Frank.
He had to give the old guy credit. Not once had he lost his temper over the past three meetings with the agents. Hadnât batted an eye at one single question.
