THE RED ROCK Casino and Hotel lobby looked almost exactly the same as it had when she and Griff left it almost a month before. She did notice a few differences though. “It looks like they recovered the furniture,” she said to Griff. “I thought it was red before.”

“Considering they’re two hundred and fifty grand richer now than they were when we first came, I would think they could afford to cover the couches. And get new carpet if they wanted.”

“Please don’t rub it in.” She never should have brought it up. She hated to remember her failures.

“It won’t happen again.”

“It can’t.”

“Yoo-hoo, kiddos, we’re here.” Grandma Hermia, despite clinging to Matt Ferguson’s arm, teetered on six-inch open-back sandals.

“Look at your grandmother,” Griff whispered. “She’s going to kill herself in those shoes, and if she’s not careful, she’ll bring Matt down with her.”

“Don’t be silly. She wears a red pair just like those for gardening.”

“I don’t believe you.” Griff put his arm around her waist and moved her closer to his side.

Suzanne felt protected near him, and she needed to feel that way now more than ever. He lowered his mouth to her ear and his breath tickled her. Then he asked in a soft whisper, “Hey, Suzie Q, do you feel like you’re some big-shot celeb with an entourage following you?” He gave her waist a gentle squeeze. His touch sent little tiny shivers radiating from the point of impact outward.

Over the past four weeks, whenever Griff had touched her, whenever she was near him, she had felt a sense of serenity, a peacefulness inside her that she hadn’t known she was able to feel. Her whole life before the month of March had been one of getting to the top, climbing the career track, making partner, never stopping, always working. The only times she’d ever relaxed were with Griff, and those games of rummy had never been enough. She’d only accepted what she had thought she couldn’t change. Now she wanted more. She didn’t want to spend her life clawing her way to the top of Merriweather, Watkins and Jones.

What she wanted was to spend her life slipping and sliding over, next to, and underneath Griff. There were jobs everywhere for accountants like her. But there was only one man for her. She’d be stupid to keep denying what she wanted. What he wanted. She would be stupid to toss away a future of love and commitment. Yes, commitment. Because she knew they were committed to each other.

He’d told her a long time ago that he never wanted to fall in love. He’d told her that love hurts. But Griff had changed. She’d seen it happen. He cared about her. He’d called in more favors at the hospital so he could take the time to be here for her. He’d emptied his mattress for her.

He had told her on the airplane as they flew over the Grand Canyon that if the Duvalls came after her with a gun, he would jump in front of her and take the bullet himself.
