As Myla got ready for the Sunday Market, Zo’s words from the night before played through her mind. They were right about one thing: it had driven her up the wall that she hadn’t responded. She’d gone over the conversation again and again all night, trying to reformulate it in any way that would have given her the last word, think of any comeback, until the hours passed one, two, and then three in the morning.

Then she’d remembered some of what Zo said. Like the color of pen she’d used in high school. Which, what the fuck , Zo? But Myla couldn’t dwell on it for too long. The bags under her eyes couldn’t be entirely covered with any shade of color corrector, and yet she had to get to the Sunday Market.

Myla put her foot on the brake as she turned the key to start her truck. Nothing happened.

She turned it again.

And again.

Nothing happened at all. Not a single whir, not a single buzz, not the engine going brr, brr, brr, or whatever sound it was that vehicles made when they were supposed to start and weren’t actually going to. No. The food truck was doing absolutely nothing.

“Hendrix?” Myla hopped out of the truck and headed for the garage, then the house. “Hendrix!”

He poked his head out the door. “Yeah?”

“Can you try to start the truck?” Surely she was just sleep-deprived and had forgotten something basic. Like how to start the damn truck.

“Uh, sure?” He got in the driver’s seat and tried to start it.

Nothing happened.

“Well, fuck.” Myla looked at Hendrix, and Hendrix looked back at her.

“Fuck indeed, Mom.”

“I’m gonna call Gina at the garage and see if Wyatt’s around.” There wasn’t much time left before the Food Truck Frenzy. If he had to order in a part… fuck. Hopefully Wyatt could figure it out.
