My mum looked stern as I told her everything. Home was the only place I wanted to be and it was time Mum knew the truth.
Once I’d finished the whole story she poured more wine, sucking in her breath as she processed my secret life. Suddenly, she came to life, and was obviously not happy. ‘Who the hell does this Gigi think she is?’
After telling her all my story I expected her to be furious with me for keeping it all from her. But I should have known she’d home in on Gigi.
‘Cheeky cow.’ She cleared her throat and looked at me. ‘You’re dating Robbie Hale, the Robbie Hale?’ It had taken a while for the name to sink in. I nodded. ‘Well done, honey.’ She held my hand gently. ‘Do you love him?’
I burst into tears and sobbed ‘Yes’, then told her how impossible it was now and that I couldn’t do it any more.
‘Crap, if you both love each other as you say you do, fight back. My daughter has more in her little finger than those trolls. My baby girl doesn’t let people walk all over her.’
I reminded her that I was an adult not a baby. It reminded me of Robbie’s mum and I realised that all mums were the same.
‘Sweetheart, you will always be my baby.’ She smoothed my hair and got up to get another bottle of wine. ‘Stay here tonight. We can have a proper catch up and you can switch off that damn phone. Let the trolls get on with their pathetic lives. If you don’t read it, it can’t hurt you. They’ll be tearing some other poor bastard apart by the end of the week.’
I wished I could be like more my mum. She’d always been comfortable in her own skin, never letting other people’s opinions bring her down. The only thing that ever broke her was losing my dad in a car accident six years ago. She had kissed him goodbye as they both headed off to work, just like any other day, but he never came home. A drunk driver selfishly took my dad away because they couldn’t be bothered to call a cab. It had just been me and her since then. Nobody would ever have her heart like my dad. She’d tried but she wasn’t ready to allow another man into her world. Her family of three sisters were all as strong minded as she was. I’d had a lot of help growing up with three aunts who had always been there for me, and my nan who had shaped her girls to be strong and independent.
It wasn’t long before my mum had updated her sisters on my news. I was drained when I’d had finally spoken to each of them and them all telling me what I should do or shouldn’t do. Their ultimate advice was to stand my ground and if Robbie was worth it not to give up. How I wished I shared their optimism.
