As soon as Ember signed off, he began to gather his things, collapsing the panes of information he had gathered and storing them back in his innernet. He repacked his clothes, for the space Vrick had rented was the top floor of a hotel known for its discretion. They’d be able to plan and run their operation from the main room in the centre of the floor, while using the rooms around it for eating and sleeping as the need arose. Lastly, he repacked the pack of goodies Keene had packed for him, arranging them carefully so that everything he thought he would need for the initial incursion was readily at hand, and then seating Vrick’s proxy securely in one of the side slots. He hefted the two bags and left

the room.

As he waited for the lift, he reached out for Malika’s node and found it in Do Not Disturb, which made sense when he checked the time, as she was on stage in a matinee at the moment. He left her a message that she’d receive as soon as she came back online with the coordinates of the hotel.

*The others have landed and they’ve set up a home base for us.* He added the address and suite number. *Join us when you’re ready.*

There was a delicious aroma in the kitchen as he stepped off the lift, and it made his stomach rumble in anticipation. He saw Valile at the coffee machine, pouring a cup. From the distracted look of concentration on his face, Ember assumed that several of the panes of information he had seen in Valile’s office had followed him out, projected on his scleral displays.

Ember activated the translator program and pinged to get Valile’s attention.

“Okay, I need to know what that is,” he said, coming up beside him.

Valile set his cup down so he could sign.

“I have no idea,” Valile signed, his bearded face widening into a grin. “I just know that everyone looks forward to the day the chef decides to make it.”

“I can see why,” Ember said, grinning.

“Have some,” Valile signed. “We can’t send you off hungry.”

“As long as you tell me what that is. And let me taste it. And give me the recipe.”

Valile laughed. “Help yourself. And I’ll see what I can do about the recipe. Let me show you the best way to have it.”

Between signing, Valile handed him a bowl and pointed out what he assured Ember was the proper sequence of ingredients.

Following the strict instructions, Ember took a bowl, ladling it first with a fine rice or pasta, then generous ladles of a thick, golden stew, and then a dollop of a pungently fragrant, bright green condiment. It smelled like Ember imagined heaven would, if he believed in heaven: sweet and spicy, demanding that he taste it.

He tasted it and his eyes rolled back in delight. “This is incredible.”

Valile beamed at his assessment, his round, dimpled face rosy with happiness. He took a seat beside Ember, obviously savouring Ember’s enjoyment.

“Leaving us so soon?” Valile signed, indicating Ember’s bags.
